BASEBALL

Canyons pounded out 18 hits, including three home runs, en route to a 21-2 rout of Glendale in a Western State Conference game at Canyons. Mike Gomez came off the bench and went 2 for 2 with a grand slam for Canyons (4-0, 8-3 overall). Fred Riscen (2-2) pitched six innings and struck out six to earn the win. Roger Nix had a two-run homer for Canyons. . . . Corey Aurand’s two-run single sparked a three-run rally in the seventh inning as Moorpark defeated Bakersfield, 11-9, in a WSC game. Jon DeGennaro (4-2), the winning pitcher, allowed five runs in eight innings, but only one was earned as Moorpark (3-1, 8-7 overall) committed four errors. Rod Stillwell went 3 for 3 with an RBI and scored four runs. . . . Thanks to sloppy fielding and wild pitching, The Master’s was swept by Hawaii Pacific in a nonconference doubleheader. Master’s defense committed five errors and Mustangs pitchers walked six batters in the first game as Hawaii Pacific pounded out 10 hits in an 11-2 victory. In the second game, the Mustangs (9-6) had 14 hits but committed three errors and walked eight batters, losing 8-7. Hawaii Pacific (14-6) had only four hits but took advantage of Master’s generous defense, scoring the winning run in the seventh on Frank Mutz’s wild pitch.

SOFTBALL

Karen Mead allowed only five hits and struck out nine to lead Moorpark to a 3-0 win over Bakersfield in a Western State Conference game at Moorpark. Mead has 124 strikeouts and a 0.98 earned-run average in 96 innings. . . . Carolyn Waltman gave up only two hits, but The Master’s committed 15 errors and lost to Cal Baptist, 8-2, in the first game of a doubleheader. Master’s (4-1, 4-7) won the second game, 17-14. Shelly Richardson had four hits and Debbie Wedeman and Elizabeth Ellis each had two hits for Master’s.

TRACK

Bo Poling won the javelin (184-7) and Donnie Laut won the shotput (52-8) as Moorpark defeated Santa Monica and Hancock in a tri-meet. Moorpark (5-1) scored 85 points, Santa Monica had 47 and Hancock totaled 44. . . . In the women’s meet, Lisa Ash and Rene Hembree each won two events to lead Moorpark to the win. Moorpark had 73 1/2 points, Santa Monica had 71 and Hancock had 25 1/2. Ash won the 1,500 meters (4:54.3) and the 880-yard run (2:27.7). Hembree, who scored points in eight events, won the long jump (16-3) and the 220 (27.1).
