HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Connelly Settles for 1-Hitter as Crespi Wins 5th Straight

Joe Testa hit his second home run this season to cap a four-run fifth inning and Greg Connelly threw a one-hitter as Crespi High shut out Chaminade, 5-0, in a nonleague game at Chaminade on Tuesday.

Connelly had his bid for a perfect game foiled when Crespi committed an error in the sixth inning. Terry Moriarty’s infield single broke up Connelly’s bid for a no-hitter.

Connelly had nine strikeouts and no walks as Crespi won its fifth consecutive game to improve its record to 5-1.

BASEBALL

Steve Kovacic hit a three-run triple and was the winning pitcher as Granada Hills opened Mid-Valley League play with a 7-2 victory over Van Nuys. Kovacic was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. . . . Joey Speakes’ two-out, RBI single in the sixth inning led Poly past Fairfax, 4-3, in an East Valley League game. Pitcher Nick Lymberopoulos allowed four hits and two walks and struck out four to record the win, Poly’s fifth straight. Ali Aguilar went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs for Poly. . . . Dennis Doody went 4 for 5 with 2 RBIs, David Waco was 4 for 6 and 3 RBIs and Jim Mattman was 5 for 6 as Grant (1-3) defeated Hollywood, 17-1, in an East Valley League game. . . . Eddie Velarde’s balk in the bottom of the seventh inning forced in Gerardo Perez with the winning run for Verdugo Hills in its 5-4 East Valley League victory over North Hollywood. Matt Gillis was 1 for 3 with two RBIs for North Hollywood.

Adam Schulhofer pitched and batted Canoga Park to a 14-3 victory over Taft in the West Valley League opener for both schools. Schulhofer allowed three hits and struck out four. He also hit a home run and tripled for four RBIs. Every Canoga Park starter hit safely, including Aaron Marks (2 for 4), Mickey Snook (2 for 3) and Scott Strickland (2 for 4). . . . Dave Waco singled home Donovan Wallace with the winning run in the bottom seventh, leading Chatsworth to a 7-6 win over Reseda in the West Valley League opener. Donovan walked and stole second base to set-up Waco’s game-winning hit. J.P. Desenfants hit a grand slam to cap a five-run Reseda fifth inning. . . . Junior Henry Schelb gave up six hits, struck out five and walked four as Cleveland defeated El Camino Real, 3-2, in a West Valley League opener. Schelb (1-0) allowed one earned run. Senior second baseman Jimmy Doushgounian was 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a stolen base for Cleveland. His third single loaded the bases in the seventh and Mike Aranzullo walked to force in the winning run.

Ray Lemus, Steve Woody and Darren Kruse each had two hits to lead Burbank (5-0) to an 8-3 nonleague victory over Bell-Jeff. . . . John Dickensen walked in the winning run in the top of the seventh as Camarillo (0-3) dropped a 6-5 nonleague decision to Lompoc. Brad Billups, Jeremy Sumrow and Kevin Ochs each had two hits for Camarillo.

Kris Kaelin was 3 for 3 with a triple and an RBI, but Thousand Oaks lost, 3-1, to Culver City in a nonleague game. Tim Doyle pitched the final five innings, allowing two runs, three strikeouts for Thousand Oaks (2-5). . . . Steve Risinger and Mike Johnson combined on a one-hitter to help Saugus defeat West Covina, 15-2, in a nonleague game. Jared Snyder went 3 for 5 and drove in three runs to lead the 14-hit attack for Saugus (2-2). Brian Stothers, Don Pedersen, Tom Dodson and Jim Fritz had two hits apiece.

Highland Hall stole 14 bases and Aaron Rudelson threw his second consecutive three-hitter as Highland Hall defeated Viewpoint, 8-1, in a nonleague game. Rudelson struck out 11 and walked 4 for his second win. . . . Royce Farrar homered and had two RBIs to lead Village Christian (2-4) to a 13-5 nonleague win over Pioneer Baptist. Kevin Ebenhoch, Bernie Verduzco, Jordan Nedeff, Chris Dyck and Tyler Victor each had two hits for Village Christian.

Jeff Cirillo went 2 for 3, but Providence (3-2) dropped a 12-3 decision to Palos Verdes at the Redondo Beach/Palos Verdes tournament. . . . Gary Nudell extended his hitting streak to five games but the Saracens lost to Beverly Hills, 12-3, in a nonleague game at Beverly Hills. Nudell went 2 for 4 with an RBI and is batting .526 (10 for 19) this season. Harvard fell to 2-3 overall.

Four Oakwood players had two hits apiece as Oakwood (2-0-1) routed Newbridge, 19-2, in a game that was called after four innings. Adam Mehr was 2 for 2, Scott Marshall was 2 for 4 with a walk and an RBI, Scott Bernstein was 2 for 5 and SteveSokoloff was 2 for 2. . . . Pitcher Kirk Peterson went 2 for 4 with an RBI and retired the last six batters as L.A. Baptist tied Fillmore, 6-6, in a nonleague game at L.A. Baptist. Steve Phillips went 3 for 4 with 1 RBI for L.A. Baptist (3-0-1).

Montclair Prep (5-1) opened defense of its Alpha League title with a 7-0 victory over La Verne Lutheran. Freshman Keeyan Cook was 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and Nathan Hill was 2 for 3. Jeff Light pitched six innings, allowing three hits and striking out four to even his record at 1-1 for Montclair Prep. . . . Buckley (3-1) stole 16 bases, including three each by Jason Weisstein and Matt Ondre, to defeat Masada, 14-4, in a Serra tournament game.

SOFTBALL

Kym Bailey pitched a no-hitter as Burbank shut out L.A. Lutheran, 3-0, in a nonleague game. Bailey (2-0), who faced the minimum of 21 batters, struck out 10 and walked one. Burbank (5-1) scored two runs in the first on Christy Calderon’s triple and another run in the fifth on Kerrie Parsons’ double.

Alemany’s Rebecca Stuart lost a no-hitter with two out in the seventh inning, but settled for a 2-1, one-hit victory over Canyon. Stuart walked one and struck out three. Suzanne Schwary knocked in Alemany’s first run and scored the game winner in the seventh on a fielder’s choice.

Junior pitcher Stacey Smock (4-2) had six strikeouts and recorded her sixth complete game as Bell-Jeff (4-2) beat Hoover, 4-2. . . . Tina Meglio had a double and two RBIs to lead Louisville (3-1) to an 8-3, nonleague victory over Agoura (0-4). Claudia Echeverri had a two-run, pinch-hit single to key Louisville’s five-run fifth inning. Kristen Heather allowed five singles and struck out three to earn the victory.

Chrystal Babcock doubled twice and drove in four runs to lead Moorpark to a 14-9 nonleague victory over Corvallis. Kathy Tanger and Monica Alverez both had two hits for Moorpark (3-3). . . . Stacy Tilton threw a two-hitter to lead Oak Park (3-0) to an 8-4 nonleague victory over Simi Lutheran (2-2). Leslie Wilcox, Michele Fetro, Jamie Medby and Kristin Hughes had two hits apiece for Oak Park.

Debi Klump drove in two runs to lead North Hollywood (2-0) to a 7-5 nonleague win over Franklin. Letty Carranza tripled twice for North Hollywood. . . . Jodee Marcione had a three-run double and scored on a throwing error to spark an eight-run first inning as Calabasas shut out Nordhoff, 17-0, in the Frontier League opener for both schools. Carolynn Blake pitched a two-hitter and had 12 strikeouts for Calabasas.

TRACK

Mitchell Butler won four events as Oakwood (70) defeated Brentwood (49) and Buckley (32) in a nonleague meet. Butler, a sophomore, jumped 21-3 in the long jump, 39-8 in the triple jump and 5-6 in the high jump. He also threw 40-0 in the shotput.

GOLF

Jon McGovern fired a 4-over-par 40 as Crespi defeated defending City champion Palisades, 224-228, in a nonleague nine-hole match at Riviera Country Club. Mike Combs shot 44 for Crespi. Palisades’ Mark Nielson was the medalist with a 1-over-par 37.
