Orange County Prep Baseball : Snyder Pitches, Runs Capistrano Valley to 2-1 Victory

Brett Snyder pitched a two-hitter and scored the winning run as Capistrano Valley High School defeated Dana Hills in nine innings, 2-1, in a South Coast League baseball opener at Capistrano Valley.

Snyder struck out nine, walked three and gave up an unearned run. He scored the game-winner after leading off the ninth with a single and moving to second on an error. Bill Barton singled through the left side of the infield, and Snyder scored when the hit was misplayed in left field.

Brian Hatch went all the way for Dana Hills and allowed seven hits.

Greg Erickson scored Dana Hills’ run in the sixth when he stole home. Capistrano Valley is 1-0, 6-1; Dana Hills is 0-1 in league.

In other South Coast League games:

El Toro 8, San Clemente 1--Mike Hoelker pitched a one-hitter, losing his no-hit bid when he allowed a single to left field with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

Mac Powell had three hits, driving in four runs for the Chargers (1-0, 7-1). San Clemente is 0-1, 2-4.

Irvine 5, Mission Viejo 4--Brian Brocofs’ RBI double with the score tied 4-4 in the seventh gave Irvine (1-0, 3-4) a victory at home. Brocofs (2-1) was also the winning pitcher. Mission Viejo is 0-1, 6-1.

In the Academy League:

Newport Christian 2, St. Michael’s 0--Joe Alston struck out a career-high 19 and allowed only one hit--an infield single--over seven innings as the Conquerers won at Luke C. Davis Field in Costa Mesa. Scott Cooper and Wayne Everett each stole two bases as they scored for Newport Christian (1-0, 4-0). The Pioneers are 0-1, 0-2.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 4, Sunny Hills 2--Brett Reuter had three hits and drove in two runs, and Jeff Bailey added a bases-empty home run for the Indians (1-0, 4-2) at Sunny Hills. Trevor Painton had two doubles for Sunny Hills (0-1, 5-5).

La Habra 8, Sonora 0--Alan Newman hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to lead the Highlanders to the victory at Sonora.

Jason Reese (3-0) was the winning pitcher for La Habra (1-0, 4-3). The Highlanders’ Mike Segovia went 2 for 3, including a double, for an RBI. Daryn Martin was the losing pitcher.

Troy 20, Buena Park 3--David Shirota was 4 for 6 with a home run and three RBIs, Mike Pawlawski hit a three-run home run and winning pitcher Chris Robinson (2-1) drove in two runs as Troy won at Buena Park. The Warriors are 1-0, 5-1; Buena Park is 0-1 in league.

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 11, Santiago 2--Mike Robertson and Eric Schriefels each hit home runs to help the Matadors defeat the Cavaliers in the league opener at Bolsa Grande. Pitcher Tony Beall allowed four hits and struck out four in six innings to earn the win.

Robbie Walker had a double, triple and two RBIs, and Andy Miramontes drove in two runs for the Matadors (5-1).

Rancho Alamitos 2, Los Amigos 2 (9 innings)--Los Amigos stranded runners on first and third with two out in the top of the ninth, and the game was called after nine innings because of darkness, leaving Lobo pitcher Ken Luckham without a victory despite having allowed only three hits.

Luckham allowed two runs in the first inning, but shut out the Vaqueros over the final eight, He struck out 10 and walked four. Luckham retired the side in order five times, and faced no more than four batters in any inning after the first.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 1, Savanna 0--Jim Murray pitched a three-hitter and hit a home run in the second inning, leading the Wildcats (1-0, 2-5) at home. Savanna is 0-1 in league play.

Western 9, Anaheim 3--Troy Babbitt went 3 for 4 with a triple, and Dan Price and Dave Brown each drove in two runs as Western (1-0, 6-2) won at home. Anaheim is 0-1, 1-6.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Orange 7, Laguna Hills 6--John Miscovich hit a three-run double and Jose Mendoza and Emilio Avila each added two hits, leading the Panthers (1-0, 5-2) at home. Laguna Hills catcher Aaron Arredondo was 4 for 4 with 2 home runs. The Hawks are 0-1, 4-3.

Woodbridge 5, Laguna Beach 4--George Allen, who went 3 for 3, singled in Doug Pryor (3 for 4) in the seventh inning, giving the Warriors (1-0, 2-3) a victory at Laguna Beach.

In the Sea View League:

Saddleback 8, Corona del Mar 1--Senior right-hander Victor Rossano (2-1) struck out 10 in six innings as the Roadrunners won their league opener at home. Sean Therien was 2 for 2, scored two runs and hit a bases-empty home run, and Paul O’Hearn was 2 for 4 with two runs batted in for Saddleback (4-3). Corona del Mar is 0-1, 3-3.

Tustin 12, Newport Harbor 3--Chris Floth went 4 for 4 and was the winning pitcher for Tustin (1-0, 3-4) in a win at home. Tustin’s Monte Roberts and Craig Morrison were each 3 for 3 with three RBIs.

University 4, Estancia 0--Darrell Sawicki (2-0) pitched a complete game, striking out 13 and walking six as the Trojans won at Estancia. Matt Dahlgren went 3 for 4 with a home run for the Trojans (1-0, 4-4). Estancia is 0-1, 0-7.

In the Serra tournament:

El Dorado junior varsity 8, Mary Star 4--Dave Moore went 4 for 5 with a double and 2 RBIs and Paul Saito drove in two runs with two doubles, as El Dorado (9-1) won fifth place at Excelsior High School in Cerritos.

Capistrano Vallley Christian 13, Brethren 6--Daron Sutton hit a grand slam for the Eagles in the fifth-round game at Ocean View.

Orange Lutheran 6, Flintridge 5--John Malmquist had a squeeze single in the eighth inning to knock in the winning run for the Lancers in a fifth-round game at Orange Lutheran.

Scot Wire (4-1) was the winning pitcher for Orange Lutheran (6-4). Matt Calhoun (1-2) took the loss for Flintridge (3-4).

In nonleague games:

Esperanza 8, Cerritos 3--Aztec starting pitcher Doug Saunders allowed one hit and no runs over five innings, leading Esperanza (6-1) to a victory at home. Jim Short hit a leadoff homer for Esperanza in the fourth inning. Alan Hodge hit a home run with two on in the seventh, accounting for all of Cerritos’ runs. Cerritos is 3-4.

St. Margaret’s 7, Liberty Christian 6--John Phillips doubled in Johnmark Fabiano with two out in the seventh inning to lead St. Margaret’s at home.

Mark Flather (3-0) was the winning pitcher for St. Margaret’s (3-1). Phillips finished 1 for 2 with an RBI.
