HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Another Perfect Day Caps 2-0 Burbank Win

Senior Debby Day pitched her second consecutive perfect game as Burbank defeated Calabasas, 2-0, in a nonleague game at Burbank.

Day (5-1), who returned Monday from a recruiting trip to Northeast Louisiana University, struck out 12 and allowed only one ball out of the infield.

Day threw a perfect game and had 12 strikeouts in a 5-0 victory over Chaminade last week and has pitched 16 straight innings without yielding a hit.

Burbank (7-1) scored its runs in the third inning when Jennifer Gomez and Christy Calderon hit back-to-back singles, scoring Tina Hurley and Kym Bailey.

BASEBALL

Darren Furlong, starting in left field for the first time this season, was 1 for 2 with a run batted in and made a key defensive play as Simi Valley beat Camarillo, 6-2, in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo. Furlong, normally a reserve infielder, also scored a run and walked twice as Simi Valley (8-1, 2-0 in league) won its seventh straight game. With two out and two on in the third inning, Furlong made a diving catch of Jeremy Sumrow’s line drive. Simi Valley’s Darren Aurand drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double and pitcher Scott Sharts (3-1) struck out five and allowed four hits to earn the win.

Pat Aragon and Greg Biley each hit home runs to lead Alemany’s 17-hit attack in a 12-1 win over Gardena in the consolation bracket of the Redondo-Palos Verdes tournament. Biley, who led off the game with his third home run, was 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs and 4 runs scored. Aragon was 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs and 4 runs scored, including his first home run. Sean Sosa had three hits and 4 RBIs for Alemany (6-4). Mike Rooney pitched a complete game, striking out seven and yielding five hits, to even his record at 1-1. . . . Jeff Cirillo was 4 for 5 with a triple and 2 RBIs to lead Providence to an 11-6 win over Compton in the consolation bracket of the Redondo-Palos Verdes tournament. Cirillo, who leads the Southern Section with 23 RBIs, also scored three runs. Providence’s Adam Grant, who was 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs, relieved starter Steve Ross (2-0) in the seventh inning and pitched out of a bases-loaded situation to record his second save. Mark Miyamoto was 2 for 5 and hit a three-run home run for Providence (6-3-1).

Pitcher Marty Garcia led La Salle to a 15-5 victory over Harvard in a Santa Fe League game. Garcia (3-1) gave up seven hits, struck out six and walked five in six innings to pick up the win. He also went 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs and 2 doubles. . . . Westlake fell to Leuzinger, 7-4, in a nonleague game at Westlake. Mike Suarez was 3 for 3 and scored 2 runs for Westlake (4-4). Westlake’s Matt Franco had an RBI and went 3 for 3 to raise his batting average to .708.

VOLLEYBALL

Steve Michalski had a team-high 12 kills and teammates John Ross and Larry Fernandez added 10 and 9, respectively, as Chatsworth defeated El Camino Real, 15-10, 15-4, 15-10, in a West Valley League match. . . . J. R. Sandin had 11 kills and Scott Mehlman added nine as Taft won a West Valley League match at Birmingham, 15-9, 15-8, 15-10. Tom Fenno had 41 assists for Taft (9-0, 3-0 in league). Birmingham fell to 2-1 in league.

Mike Bermudes had 16 kills and Steve Crossland added 14 as Notre Dame defeated Alemany, 15-5, 15-7, 15-8, in a nonleague match.

GOLF

Lee Chester of Kennedy won medalist honors with a 5-over-par 76, but Palisades won the Valley 5-A League match, 444-447, at Knollwood Golf Course.
