ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASEBALL : Roundup : Estancia’s Norville Perfect Against Saddleback

Share

This has been anything but a perfect season for the Estancia High School baseball team, which is 2-9. But Friday, the Eagles’ Pat Norville pitched a perfect game.

Norville, a senior left-hander, made his first no-hitter more memorable by retiring all 21 Saddleback batters he faced in Estancia’s 1-0, Sea View League victory at Estancia.

Mixing a fastball, slider, curve and occasional changeup, Norville struck out five, retired nine on ground balls and seven on fly balls. The Eagles also backed Norville with four outstanding defensive plays.

Norville raced to right field as Tony Mendoza made a running catch of Sean Therien’s fly ball for the game’s final out.

“I was already in right field by the time he made the catch,” Norville said. “It was incredible. I looked around and everyone was coming at me. There were tears everywhere. It was a great feeling.”

The Eagles scored the game’s only run in the sixth inning when Saddleback pitcher Victor Rossano, who allowed three hits, walked four straight batters.

The Estancia defense kept the Eagles in the game and the Roadrunners off the bases. In the first inning, third baseman Russ Wilson made a diving stop of Therien’s grounder and threw him out, and center fielder Danny Dougherty made a running catch of Danny Ontiveros’ line drive.

Jason White threw Ontiveros out after fielding a grounder at deep shortstop in the fourth, and second baseman Mark Hartley made a leaping catch of a line drive.

Corona del Mar 2, Newport Harbor 1--Kevin Maas scored on a fielder’s choice to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth for the Sea Kings at Newport Harbor.
