San Diego High School Baseball : El Capitan Holds On as Grossmont Rally Falls Short

Grossmont High School rallied for four runs in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough as El Capitan held on for a 9-8 Grossmont League victory at Grossmont.

El Capitan (5-0, 9-2) took over sole possession of first place with the victory. Nino DiMaio got Rick Twyman to pop up a 3-1 pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh to end Grossmont’s rally.

DiMaio got his fifth save and also went 3 for 4 and scored twice to lead the Vaqueros. Ken Barnum (4-0) pitched 4 innings for the victory.

Grossmont (3-1, 9-2) ace Lance Dickson had his worst outting of the season, leaving after four innings with El Capitan leading 4-0.

“Dickson made a few bad pitches, and we were fortunate to capitalize on them today,” said Steve Vickery, El Capitan coach. “Our kids just jumped on him and Grossmont had to play catch-up the entire game.”

Santana 13, Granite Hills 3--Granite Hills led, 3-1, entering the fifth inning at home, but Santana (3-2, 8-3) rallied to score four runs. Granite Hills (3-1, 6-3) committed six errors.

Mount Miguel 9, Valhalla 3--Anthony Garnica (3-3) went the distance at home. Eddie Cervantes went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Raul Ramalho was 2 for 2 with two RBIs to lead Mount Miguel (1-3, 6-4)). Valhalla is 2-3, 4-7.

METRO CONFERENCE

Hilltop 4, Southwest 3--Ward Lannom scored on Steve Gritts’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth for Hilltop (2-1, 3-5).

Marian 11, Bonita Vista 6--Augie Rojas went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Timmy Nelson was 2 for 4 with three RBIs to lead Marian (1-1, 3-6) at Bonita Vista. Sammy Guevarra went the distance. Randy Abshier went 3 for 4 with three RBIs to lead Bonita Vista (1-2, 3-9).

Coronado 2, Montgomery 1--Left-hander Paul Austin allowed only two hits to lead Coronado (3-0, 9-2) at Montgomery (1-1). Trailing 1-0, Coronado tied the score with a bases-loaded walk in the fourth and Ritchie Bledsoe drove in the winning run with a single in the sixth.

Chula Vista 17, Castle Park 4--Chula Vista pitcher Anthony Garcia walked the first four batters he faced as Castle Park led, 4-0, after one inning. But Garcia allowed only two hits and had eight strikeouts after the first. Brian Murphy had a double, triple and five RBIs for Chula Vista (1-1, 4-5). Castle Park is 0-2, 6-3.

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

University of San Diego High School 15, Mission Bay 7--USDHS (3-2, 8-2) scored 12 runs on only two hits in the fifth to defeat Mission Bay (3-2, 7-4).
