Southland’s CIF, City Standouts to Compete in Classic on Friday

The fourth Southern California Prep All-Star Basketball Classic, featuring many of the top senior college prospects, will be played Friday night at California State University, Dominguez Hills.

The event pits City boys and girls against counterparts from the CIF Southern Section. The girls’ game begins at 6:30 with the boys’ contest at 8:30.

Leading the City boys are Fairfax star J.D. Green, Sean Davis of El Camino Real, Taft’s Kevin Franklin (City scoring leader at 34.2 points per game) and Gary Gray, the 3-A player of the year out of Granada Hills.

Southern Section stars include St. Monica’s Jason Matthews, All-American David Whitmore of St. Bernard, Kevin Williams of Verbum Dei and 6-10 towers Mark Georgeson (Marina) and Sean Rooks (Fontana).

The City girls are headed by All-City Diane DeCree (4-A player of the year) and Yolanda Lewis of Kennedy and Dollie Lucero, Marshall, Ruth Aguilar, Lincoln, and Dana Jones, Reseda (3-A players of the year).

The Southern Section girls feature Carrie Egan of Brea, Cristi Smith (4-A player of the year) and two of Smith’s Edison teammates, Michelle Hennessey and Denise Ogburn, Nina Revoyr of Culver City, and Tia Thomas of Morningside.

Tickets cost $6 (18 and over), $4 (high school students with I.D.) and $2 (under 12).
