South Squad Chosen for Orange County All-Star Basketball Game

Six players who have signed national letters of intent to play for Division I colleges next season highlight the South boys’ team that will participate in the 22nd Orange County All-Star basketball game June 20.

South teammates Mike Herring of Irvine High School and Vince Bryan of Woodbridge have both signed with Brigham Young University. Bryan helped the Warriors win the state Division II championship last month in Oakland.

Joining them on the all-star team will be forward Ricky Butler of Ocean View, who will play for Kansas; center Mark Georgeson of Marina, who will play for Arizona; forward Jeff Herdman of Mission Viejo, who will play for UC Irvine, and forward Lasse Glassen of University, who will play for Pennsylvania.

Steve Popovich of Marina will coach the team. Popovich has a 183-120 record in 12 seasons at Marina.

The game, sponsored by the Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club, will be played in either Orange Coast College’s Peterson Gym or UC Irvine’s Bren Center.

Edison High’s record-breaking duo of center Kristi Smith and guard Michelle Hennessey head the South girls’ team in the 10th Orange County All-Star basketball game June 20.

Smith set an Edison single-season scoring record with 642 points in 33 games after she transferred from Elsinore for her senior season. Hennessey holds the career assist record at Edison and was an all-Sunset League selection three times.

Eric Bangs, who coached Woodbridge to the Pacific Coast League title and the semifinals of the Southern Section 2-A playoffs, will coach the team.
