San Diego High School Baseball : Patrick Henry Beats Santana in Extra Innings

Share

Santana’s Tom Wilkerson and Patrick Henry’s Tony McVicar traded the roles of hero and goat in the span of one inning Saturday as the Sultans lost in extra innings to Patrick Henry, 5-4, in the first round of the Lions’ Tournament.

With McVicar pitching, Wilkerson doubled in the top of the ninth and scored what appeared to be the winning run on a single by Barry O’Gorman. Although the AAA Division tournament game was played at Santana, the Sultans were designated the visiting team, giving Patrick Henry the last at-bat.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Eric Hefland of Patrick Henry singled and stole second. McVicar walked and advanced to third on Cory Powell’s ground-rule double, which drove in Hefland to tie the game. Mark LeVoie then hit a ground ball to Wilkerson, who bobbled it, allowing McVicar to score the winning run. McVicar was the winning pitcher.
