Orange County Prep Baseball : Laguna Beach Defeats Banning

Ted Savage was 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs and Keith McDonald was 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs to lead Laguna Beach High School to an 8-3 victory over Banning in the first round of the Chino Tournament at Chino High.

The Artists scored four runs in the fourth inning including a three-run home run by McDonald.

Winning pitcher Keith McDonald (2-3) threw a complete game, striking out seven batters.

Brad Magers, younger brother of Laguna Beach Coach Scott Magers, played in his first varsity game and went 2 for 4. Magers has been a four-year member of Laguna Beach’s varsity tennis team.

In other Chino Tournament games:

San Clemente 5, Barstow 3--The Tritons (0-7, 2-10) defeated Barstow with an 11-hit attack. Brent Ferguson had a double and a single and three RBIs to lead San Clemente.

In the Anaheim Tournament:

Westminster 6, La Quinta 1--The Lions, playing in the championship quarterfinals, were led by Al Rodriguez who was 2 for 3 with a triple, home run and one RBI. Ben Mendoza was 3 for 4 with one RBI. Winning pitcher John Gonzales (4-0) did not allow a hit in three innings of relief. Starter Brett Grebe allowed just two hits through the first four innings.

Troy 4, Savanna 1--Jeff Ferren (3-0) pitched a complete game two-hitter to lead the Warriors (11-3) in the consolation quarterfinals at Glover Stadium. Troy scored three runs in the sixth inning to go ahead 4-0. Kyle Coburn doubled and Steve Shirley tripled in the sixth to lead the Warriors. Savanna’s run was unearned.

In Angelus League play:

Servite 15, Pius X 1--Greg Coleman hit a three-run home run in the third inning, and Brian Criss hit a three-run homer in the fourth to lead the Friars to an easy victory over the Warriors at Servite High. Chris Ulmer and Tom Szymanski each added three hits and two RBIs for Servite (6-1, 11-2). James Ferguson pitched five innings of one-hit ball.

In the Bolsa Grande Tournament:

Capistrano Valley 5, Leuzinger 0--Winning pitcher Lance August (3-0) allowed 10 hits but shut out the Olympians in the championship quarterfinals at Los Amigos High. Rightfielder Tommy Adams was 3 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs. Capistrano Valley is 13-2.

Sacred Heart (San Francisco) 8, Bolsa Grande 3--Sacred Heart scored five runs in the first inning on five hits in this championship quarterfinal game at Bolsa Grande. The biggest hits of the inning were back-to-back doubles by Tom Rovetti and John Brown. Bolsa Grande could manage just three hits against winning pitcher Ed Flynn (2-0).

Los Amigos 7, Dominguez 1--Winning pitcher Andy Baturevich pitched a complete game, striking out nine batters, to lead the Lobos (2-12-1) in the consolation quarterfinals at Los Amigos. The Lobos scored three runs in the second inning helped by back-to-back triples by Mike Eicherly and Richard Burillo. Freshman Richard Burillo, playing in his first varsity game, got a single to drive in two runs.

In the Santa Ana Elks Tournament:

El Toro 4, Irvine 7--Jeff Walters went 3 for 4 with three doubles and one RBI to lead the Vaqueros to this victory in the championship semifinals at Rancho Santiago College. Nick Nikolenko was 3 for 3 with one RBI, and Terry Rahmatulla hit a two-run triple in the seventh inning to help Irvine. Winning pitcher Brian Brocoff pitched a complete game, and allowed seven hits.

Saddleback 13, Long Beach Jordan 8--Neil Carter went 4 for 4 with three RBIs to lead the Roadrunners (10-6) in the consolation semifinals at Santa Ana High. Danny Ontiveros was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Winning pitcher Brian Hoialmen (3-0), also went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs.

Laguna Hills 9, Banning 2--The Hawks (9-7) scored three runs in the first inning and three in the second to win the consolation semifinal at Saddleback. Steve Radigan was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Aaron Arredondo was 2 for 4 with one RBI and Alan Short was 3 for 4 with one RBI. Winning pitcher Jon Willard pitched a complete game, striking out 10 batters.

Villa Park 10, Orange 7--The Spartans scored three runs in the first inning and four in the fourth at Orange High. Villa Park had 10 hits and was led by John Genova who was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Orange had two players hit home runs. Jim Vicek hit a grand slam in the third inning, and John Miscovich hit a one-run home run in the fifth.
