HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL : Streaking Alemany Trips Notre Dame

Alemany extended its winning streak to seven games Tuesday with the help of a ground ball that was lost in the sun and two errors that gave Alemany a 7-5, extra-inning win over Notre Dame in a Del Rey League game at Notre Dame.

Alemany (13-5, 4-3) passed the .500 mark in league for the first time this season while Notre Dame (6-6-1, 4-2-1) dropped out of a first-place tie with Crespi.

With two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Alemany’s Mike Gartlan hit what appeared to be a routine chopper to third baseman Jeff Antoon. But Antoon, blinded by the glare of the setting sun, dropped to one knee and the ball hopped over his head.

Gartlan stole second and scored when Mike Sims’ ground ball was fumbled by shortstop Brian Woolley for an error to put Alemany ahead, 6-5. Sims stole second and scored when Mark Scott’s grounder went off Woolley’s glove.

Alemany stole six bases. Notre Dame Coach Bob Mandeville benched catcher Bobby Hughes, who missed practice Saturday. He was replaced by Rob Kostenbader.
