COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : Canyons Clinches WSC Title, 15-7

College of the Canyons hammered seven home runs Tuesday in a 15-7 victory over Glendale that clinched the Western State Conference Southern Division title.

But the biggest hit of the game wasn’t a home run.

With Canyons leading, 5-4, Ray Palagyi hit a three-run double to highlight an eight-run fourth inning.

Canyons’ Mike Bible and Roger Nix each had two home runs, including back-to-back homers in the fourth inning. Mark Gieseke added a home run, double and three RBIs for Canyons (26-5-1, 20-1-1 in conference).

BASEBALL

Frank Mutz’s six-hitter gave The Master’s a 12-5 victory over Point Loma and a split of an NAIA District III doubleheader. Mutz struck out six and walked five to improve his record to 7-4. Jeff Preston went 3 for 3, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs for Master’s (24-20, 16-7), but Point Loma won the first game, 6-3.

Mike Greenwood had a two-run single to key a three-run third inning as Moorpark (20-14, 13-9) defeated Bakersfield, 9-3, in a Western State Conference game.

TENNIS

Pierce College advanced to Monday’s second round of the Southern California junior college team championships, defeating Long Beach, 5-1, at the Los Angeles Tennis Club. John Freeman, Robert Grundy, Alex Olaya, Mike Rosenthal and Dereck Messana all registered singles victories for Pierce.

SOFTBALL

Kim Peppi’s two-out single in the sixth inning gave Cal Lutheran a 4-3 victory over Master’s and a sweep of an NAIA District III doubleheader. Cal Lutheran, behind Dee Pilkington’s four-hit pitching, won the first game, 4-0.
