Share

When Hart High right-hander David Lee’s arm started to tire and a blister developed on the middle finger of his pitching hand in the sixth inning of a Foothill League game against Burbank on Tuesday, he wasn’t concerned. Lee’s arm gets sore and a blister develops every time he pitches. He knew he could endure at least one more inning.

But Lee (8-1), who finished with a five-hitter, wound up pitching four more innings as Hart tied the game in the seventh and won it in the 10th, 6-2. The victory allowed Hart (15-6, 7-3 in league) to maintain sole possession of second place, one game behind Alhambra. Burbank is 13-6, 5-5.

In the top of the seventh inning, Burbank pitcher Bryan Chandler walked Jim Bonds, then hit Don Hinson and Dean Fausett with his next two pitches to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Joe DeSchryver drove in Bonds with an infield single to tie the score, 2-2.

With the bases loaded in the 10th, Sheldon Sparks scored the winning run when Burbank shortstop Ray Lemus mishandled a grounder by Bonds. Hinson then singled in another run and Lee scored on a wild pitch by reliever Wayne Schull. Bonds later scored on a fielder’s choice.
