Orange Glen Invitational : Lincoln’s Rowe Sets Meet Marks in 100 and 440

Lincoln High School sprinter Patrick Rowe set two meet records Friday night at the 19th Annual Orange Glen Invitational track and field meet at Orange Glen High School.

Rowe, who will play football at San Diego State, set a 100-meter record in 10.6, breaking his own mark of 10.7 set a year ago. He also ran 48.7 in the 440-yard run to break the 1985 mark of 48.9 set by Morse’s David Gayden.

Before this week, Rowe had trailed Crawford sprinter Raymond Ethridge in the 100 meters, but in a duel meet Wednesday, Rowe ran 10.4 to better Ethridge’s previous best of 10.6. When the two met on the track, Rowe was better by two-tenths of a second.

Ethridge, who ran 10.8 for second place in the 100, set a meet record and a yearly best in the 200 meters at 21.4.

In the two-mile, Marc Davis refused to lose. Davis, the national cross-country champion from San Diego High--allowed Fallbrook’s Jason Martin as much as a 75-meter lead for three quarters of the race before coming back to win in 9:19.7, setting a meet record in the process. It was his second victory of the day. Earlier he ran away from the field in the mile, winning in 4:17.4. Clark Sandknop of San Dieguito was second.

“I didn’t think he would go out that fast,” Davis said. “The first 100 meters of this race was a lot faster than the mile. When I saw Jason out there, I knew I couldn’t hang back at 70 (seconds), but I didn’t want to get up to him and burn myself out.”

Davis caught up to the tiring Martin with a little more than two laps remaining and passed him. However, on the back stretch of the final lap, Martin passed Davis. By the time the runners reached the final turn, Davis had passed Martin again, this time for good.

“When I caught him with 2 1/2 laps to go, I knew I had time to work him down,” said Davis, who broke the meet record of 9:22.7 set in 1981 by Helix’s Stan Aguilar. Martin finished in 9:20.6.

Ramona pole vaulter Pat Alduenda vaulted four times without missing and claimed the meet record at 15-6. Patrick Henry’s Sean Rapp had two attempts to tie Alduenda at 15-6, but missed.

“My back’s hurt,” said Alduenda, the county record-holder. “I’ll save (thoughts for a section record) for CIF (the San Diego Section meet).”

Alduenda said that he injured his back long jumping in a duel meet Wednesday. He didn’t show any signs of the injury but said he re-injured it when he cleared 14-0.

Poway’s Doug Eagle ran a 40.0 in the 300-meter hurdles to set a county best. It wasn’t a meet record, however.
