Taylor Resigns at Trabuco Hills

Butch Taylor, who developed Trabuco Hills High School’s basketball team into a Southern Section playoff participant in only two seasons, has resigned.

Last season, Taylor led the Mustangs to an 18-6 record, a second-place finish in the Pacific Coast League and a berth in the 2-A division playoffs in only their second year of existence. Trabuco Hills was 12-10 playing an independent schedule in Taylor’s first season.

“Butch’s decision did not come as a surprise,” said Gary Sabella, Trabuco Hills athletic director. “He wanted more time for himself and his family. Basketball is a year-round commitment, and Butch thought it would be better to have someone else with more time handle the team.”

Taylor became head coach at Long Beach Wilson in 1970 and led the Bruins to the 4-A division semifinals twice in six seasons. He resigned in 1976 and came to Trabuco Hills in 1985 when a longtime friend, Bill Brand, was named the school’s first principal.
