Share

Birmingham second baseman Damon Buford helped lead Birmingham to six straight Mid-Valley League wins with outstanding defense and a hot bat. Buford, a senior, is 13 for 23 with 2 home runs over his last six games, which includes Birmingham’s 20-14 win over Kennedy on Tuesday. Buford has struck out only twice this season.

Batting: With a hit against Reseda on Tuesday, Chatsworth’s Rex McMackin has hit safely in 18 consecutive games. . . . El Camino Real, which had scored only seven runs in its previous five games, scored 21 in games against Taft and Reseda last week. . . . Canyon’s Travis Regnolds raised his average 90 points over the past three games and is now batting .453. . . . Crespi pinch-hitters John Dempsey and Mark Cavaretta have combined for 15 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

Bases on Balls: Many West Valley League teams seem to have given up on pitching to Canoga Park’s Mike Urman, who is batting .514. Urman has walked 13 times and has an on-base percentage of .640. . . . Saugus’ Don Pedersen walked four times last week to set a Saugus single-season record with 24. Pedersen, whose on-base percentage is .610, is Saugus’ career leader with 41.

Track and Field: The Marmonte League dominated Friday’s Ventura County Championships at Camarillo High. Individuals from the league won 23 of 31 events. Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks each won six events. . . . Amy Nesbitt of Newbury Park (2:17.8 in the 800 meters), Christy Farrell of Thousand Oaks (4:59.9, 1,600) and Vanessa Dixon of Simi Valley (18-3, long jump) all won their events with Valley-area season-best marks. . . . When Simi Valley sophomore Danny Cross ran 49.8 to place second in the 400 meters, he became the 10th Valley-area sprinter to break the 50-second barrier this season.
