Chapman Men Seeded First in Tennis Tournament

The Chapman College men’s tennis team has been seeded first in this week’s NCAA Division II tournament at Cal State Northridge and will face Tennessee Martin at 1:30 p.m. today in its quarterfinal match.

The Panthers, 19-11 overall and California Collegiate Athletic Assn. champions with an 11-1 conference mark, are attempting to win their second national title in the past three seasons. They finished second last season, losing to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 5-4, in the finals. Tennessee Martin is 14-7 overall and has lost in the quarterfinals in each of the past two seasons.

Chapman will go with a singles lineup of Miles Walker (34-6, ranked second in Division II) at No. 1, Paul Wekesa (8-4) at No. 2, Olivier Amerlinck (13-17) at No. 3, Paul Charlesworth (24-13) at No. 4 and freshmen David Seline (17-19) and Allen Juinio (17-15) at Nos. 5 and 6. The doubles teams will be Walker and Wekesa (0-0) at No. 1, Seline and Charlesworth (12-6) at No. 2 and Amerlinck and Juinio (5-0) at No. 3.

In today’s other quarterfinal matches, second-seeded Hampton Institute plays UC Davis at 9:00 a.m., third-seeded Rollins College plays Cal Poly SLO at 1:30 p.m. and fourth-seeded Cal State Hayward plays Cal State Bakersfield at 9:00 a.m. The semifinals will be held on Tuesday, with the finals and third-place match Wednesday.
