STAT WATCH : Hart’s Fausett Sets Fire to Own League

Dean Fausett of Hart continues to feast on Foothill League pitching. In two lopsided wins over San Gabriel last week, Fausett was 6 for 9 with 5 runs batted in. Fausett, who raised his batting average to .304, had 10 hits in a four-game span and is 17 for 36 (.472) in league games. In nonleague games, Fausett was 4 for 33 (.121). . . . Montclair Prep freshman Keyaan Cook, the younger brother of Stanford standout Toi Cook, was 6 for 8 with 4 extra base hits and 8 RBIs last week. Led by Cook, Montclair Prep batted .552 last week to raise its average to .349.

Batting: Matt Franco, Jim Henderson and Greg Struhl--the three, four and five batters in Westlake’s lineup--have combined for 78 RBIs. . . . Newbury Park senior Tim Bohling needs two hits to equal the school record of 36 set in 1972 by Jerry Torgeson. . . . When a team bats .325 and averages 6 1/2 runs a game it usually wins. Not so with Village Christian, which has a team ERA of 6.60. The Crusaders have lost eight games when they scored five or more runs and three when they scored 10 or more. . . . Canyon’s Ernie Figueroa raised his average 48 points last week to .357.

Baserunning: Hart’s Sheldon Sparks has stolen 32 bases but only one in the past six games, simply because he hasn’t had many opportunities to run. Coach Bud Murray said that Sparks, who bats leadoff, hasn’t been reaching base often in the first inning and that Hart (18-7, 10-4 in the Foothill League) is usually too far ahead to run late in games. . . . Canyon has stolen 73 bases in 81 attempts.

Softball: Under first-year Coach Joe Wortmann, Newbury Park (21-4, 12-0) clinched its fifth consecutive Marmonte League title last week. Senior Janene Vigar (7-1) and sophomores Robin Thomas (6-1) and Marilyn Carroll (8-2) give the Panthers a deep and sound pitching staff. First baseman Chris Singer (.471), left fielder Wendy Tabakman (.387) and Thomas (.351) are Newbury Park’s top hitters. . . . Canyon’s Stephanie Keeler was 5 for 5 and teammate Rebecca Schuster was 4 for 4 in a an 11-2 win last week over Quartz Hill.
