High School Softball Playoff Pairings Announced

Garden Grove, Laguna Hills, Sunny Hills and Woodbridge high schools have been seeded in the top four in their divisions in the Southern Section softball playoff pairings, which were announced Monday.

In the 3-A division, Sunny Hills (22-5), the Freeway League champion, is seeded second and will play host to Villa Park (17-8) in the first round Friday. Garden Grove, the fourth-seeded team, will play at home against the winner of the wild-card game between Hacienda Heights Wilson and Bellflower. Defending champion Crescenta Valley (20-2) is the top-seeded team.

In 2-A, Laguna Hills (20-6)--which tied Woodbridge for the Pacific Coast League title but earned the league’s top spot by a coin flip--is seeded second and will play host to St. Bernard (9-10) in the first round Friday. Woodbridge (18-6), the 1986 3-A runner-up, is the fourth-seeded team and will play host to St. Anthony’s (12-7). Undefeated La Serna (20-0) is the No. 1 seed.

In 4-A, St. Joseph (14-2)--the 1986 4-A champion--is the top seed in the division, which will play its first-round games Thursday.

Four Sunset League teams--Marina, 1986 4-A runner-up Fountain Valley, Edison and Ocean View--are among the eight Orange County teams in the 4-A playoffs. Ocean View (13-11), which finished fourth in the league, made the playoffs by winning an at-large bid.
