Southern Section Tennis : Capo Valley Sweeps Singles, Beats Edison

Capistrano Valley High School swept all nine singles sets to upset Edison, 13-5, in a Southern Section 4-A tennis match Tuesday at Capistrano Valley.

Capistrano Valley (15-4) finished second in the South Coast League, and Edison (17-6) won the Sunset League and was the third-seeded team in 4-A.

Alarick Jura won his matches, 6-3, 6-4, 6-0; Blake Denison won his, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, and Rich Chauey won, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3. Capistrano Valley’s No. 1 doubles team of Jamil Atcha and Steve Sprinkle also swept, 6-3, 7-5, 6-2. Capistrano Valley plays Servite in a semifinal Thursday.

In other 4-A division matches:

Servite 12, Calabasas 6--No. 1 singles Jeff Belloli (6-3, 6-0, 6-2) and No. 1 doubles Jason Chung and Mark Gothard (6-3, 6-1, 6-2) swept their sets to lead the Friars (18-3) at Calabasas.

Dana Hills 10, Westlake 8--Steve Saba and Gavin Fenske swept their singles matches at Sunset Hills Tennis Club in Westlake, leading the top-seeded Dolphins to the semifinals Thursday against Foothill.

Foothill 14, Mater Dei 4--The Knights (15-5) won eight out of nine doubles sets to advance at Foothill. Dan Turbow (6-1, 6-2, 6-0) and Jeff Giesea (6-1, 6-4, 6-2) led Foothill (15-5) in singles.

In 3-A:

Los Alamitos 11, Sunny Hills 7--Kit Codik and Shubert Koong swept in singles and the doubles team of Gary Cunneen and Richard Skoglund swept for the top-seeded Griffins (23-0).

San Marino 10, Laguna Beach 8--No. 1 singles Andrew Sheppert (59-1) defeated Brad Magers, Grant Hughes and Bob Rushing, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, to lead San Marino (17-2). Laguna Beach’s No. 1 doubles team of Young and Kirner swept their sets, 7-6, 6-2, 6-1, to lead the Artists (18-5).

In 2-A:

Valencia 12, Burroughs 6--Matt Ai and Eric Flint swept in singles and Charles Lee and Colin Robinson swept in doubles for the Tigers (22-1).
