Southern Section 5-A Tennis : Corona del Mar Beats Buena to Advance to Quarterfinals

Given new life by a Southern Section ruling, Corona del Mar High School advanced to the 5-A tennis semifinals Wednesday with a 14-4 victory over Buena at Buena.
Corona del Mar lost in the quarterfinals to Beverly Hills, 14-4, Friday but the Southern Section ruled a Beverly Hills player ineligible after the match. Buena also lost to Beverly Hills in the first round.
Mike Briggs, Corona del Mar’s No. 1 singles player, swept his three sets, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, to improve to 51-0 this season. The doubles team of Rob Atkins and Doug Schulein also swept, 7-5, 6-1, 6-3.
Corona del Mar (17-5) will play host to second-seeded Santa Barbara today in one semifinal. The teams met earlier this season with Santa Barbara winning, 12-6.
