San Diego Section Tennis : Miyamoto, Mountain, Askvig Win Their 1st-Round Matches

Three of the top tennis players in the state won their matches in the first round of the San Diego Section boys’ individual tennis tournament Monday at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.

This year, the tournament has been expanded from 32 to 40 players, with the top eight seeds receiving byes through the first two rounds.

Patrick Henry’s Jeff Miyamoto, who is considered for national rankings but is not in the top 10, failed to receive a bye. Miyamoto defeated Oliver Davidian of Poway, 6-2, 6-1.

Kelly Mountain of Point Loma and Mike Askvig of Valhalla, two players considered for state rankings but without byes in the section tournament, also won. Mountain defeated Hoover’s Gary Anderson, 6-1, 6-1, and Askvig beat Crawford’s Ray Briz, 6-2, 7-5.

The top eight seeds in singles won’t play their first matches until 3 p.m. today, after second-round play, which begins at 1. In doubles, the top seeds won’t play until Wednesday’s third round. The second round of doubles begins today at 1 p.m.

Helix’s Farschid Fatehi will play Dan McKenzie of La Jolla at 1 p.m. today, with the winner meeting top-seeded and defending section champion Michael Chang of San Dieguito at 3 p.m. Fatehi defeated Francis Parker’s Roger Ray, 0-6, 6-1, 6-3, and McKenzie defeated Bonita Vista’s Christian Costanza, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
