PREP BASEBALL HIGHLIGHTS

According to area coaches, these are some of the top performances by high school players this year.

Steve Calhoun and Derek Stott, Brethren--During the past two years the seniors combined to steal 88 bases.

Joe Cypert, Schurr--The senior right-hander pitched nine complete games this season. He was also chosen to be the Foothill League recipient of the Southern Section’s “Shake for Sportsmanship” award.

Ricky Davis, Schurr--His pair of singles and a grand slam tied a state record for most hits in an inning.

Ralph Diaz, Bell--The pitcher is now 13-2 after defeating Westchester, 6-5, in the City Section 2-A Division semifinal game. The city section championship game is Friday at Dodger Stadium and it is not known if Diaz can start with only two days of rest.

Dwayne Fowler, Leffingwell Christian--The senior catcher drove in 40 runs before the Lions were beaten last Friday by Chadwick, 10-7, in the Southern Section playoffs of the Small Schools’ Small Division.

Phil Kendall, Millikan--The right-handed pitcher averaged one and a half strikeouts for every inning pitched.

Darryl Lancaster, Whittier Christian--The senior pitcher is 13-1 after beating Gladstone High School, 13-4, Tuesday in the Southern Section 1-A Division semifinal game. He is the likely starter in Saturday afternoon’s championship game at Dodger Stadium, when Whittier Christian meets St. Bernard.

Mike McNary, Lakewood--The senior pitcher gave up four runs in Tuesday’s playoff game with El Dorado High School, but Lakewood went on to win 5-4. McNary (11-3) had gone 36 playoff innings without allowing a run. The right-hander is expected to be the starting pitcher when Lakewood plays Esperanza High School Saturday night at Dodger Stadium in the Southern Section 4-A Division championship game.

Joey Oropeza, Gahr--The sophomore shortstop struck out only once in 65 at-bats.

Jason Pantages, St. Paul--The senior broke the school’s record for number of stolen bases in a season. He was safe on all 16 attempts.

Ryan Rienstra, Valley Christian--He absorbed his first loss in two years of varsity pitching last week when St. Bernard defeated the Crusaders, 6-3, in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section 1-A Division playoffs. Rienstra was 15-1 during that span.

Ray Walker, Cantwell--He is expected to be named to the All-Southern Section 1-A Division team for the second consecutive year. He drove in 33 runs and struck out only 5 times in 75 at-bats and was voted co-most valuable player of the Camino Real League. The three-sport letterman was an All-Northwest Conference choice in football and an All 1-A Division guard in basketball.

Cary Windes, St. John Bosco--In three years on the varsity, he batted .428 and struck out only 9 times in 252 at-bats.
