An overnight blanket of fog helped firefighters control a blaze that destroyed 400 acres of brush on empty state-owned land near Novato. Jim Mann of the Marin County Fire Department said the fire was contained by 11 p.m. Friday and was completely controlled by 8 a.m. Saturday. No injuries or property damage were reported. The blaze was reported shortly after noon Friday, and spread quickly northward from Lucas Valley toward Novato, about 20 miles north of San Francisco. The fire began only a mile east of film maker George Lucas’ 1,735-acre Skywalker Ranch, headquarters of his production company, but the blaze moved away from the ranch. Fire Chief Stanley Rowan said he suspected arson.
