Martin Scores 43 as St. Anthony Beats Servite

Darrick Martin, St. Anthony High School guard, scored 43 points Saturday night to lead the Saints to a 95-78 victory over Servite in the second round of the Servite Classic Summer basketball tournament in the Friars’ gym.

Martin, a 6-foot senior who scored 33 points in Friday’s first-round win over Fullerton, made 16 of 22 shots from the field, 10 of 15 from the free-throw line and had 7 steals to give St. Anthony a berth in today’s semifinals.

The Saints will play Capistrano Valley at 11 a.m., with the winner advancing to tonight’s 8 p.m. championship game.

Todd Marinovich led Capistrano Valley over Marina, 58-54, Saturday. David Yamate scored 20 for Marina.

Mater Dei and Foothill will play in the other semifinal, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Mater Dei, with 19 points by Mike Hopkins, advanced with a 62-49 win over Santa Monica Saturday. Kevin Rembert and Char Ruppel added 17 points each for the Monarchs.

Bill Mazurie scored 24 points and Greg Reiber added 16 to help Foothill defeat Los Alamitos, 71-58, in the quarterfinals. Brett Pagett scored 20 points for the Griffins.

In consolation games Saturday, Woodbridge, behind Adam Keefe’s 24 points, defeated Long Beach Poly, 47-37; Dominguez beat Fullerton, 63-56; Pius X defeated Westminster, 80-69, and Inglewood beat Lakewood, 70-52.

Woodbridge will play Dominguez in the consolation semifinals today at 8:30 a.m. In fifth-place semifinal games, Santa Monica will play Los Alamitos at 1:30 p.m. and Servite will play Marina at 2:30. The consolation championship is scheduled for 3:30, to be followed by the fifth-place game (5), the third-place game (6:30) and the championship game.
