The San Diego Section All-Star football team was accused of being boisterous and messy earlier this week by the Marine Corps.

But it was that kind of behavior that helped the San Diego all-stars to a 26-19 victory over the Los Angeles City Section Saturday night in the Lions College Prep All-Star Football Game at the Aztec Bowl.

An estimated 7,200 fans saw the renewal of the San Diego-Los Angeles rivalry that was discontinued in 1963.

Earlier this week, San Diego was evicted from its living quarters at the Marine Corps Recruitment Depot because the Marines could not control the team.

The Los Angeles City squad’s luck was no better Saturday night

With 2:43 left in the game, quarterback Maurice Jackson of Madison High connected with Johnny Ace of Valhalla on a 49-yard touchdown play to give San Diego a 26-19 lead.

The San Diego defense seemed right at home in the Los Angeles backfield, limiting Los Angeles to 37 yards total offense in the first half. In the process, San Diego committed eight first-half penalties totaling 90 yards.

In the early minutes of the first period, the San Diego defensive line smothered Los Angeles running back Calvin Holmes (carson High), forcing a fumble. San Diego defensive lineman Mike Hastings (University City) recovered on the Los Angeles 44.

Seven plays later, Tommy Booker (Vista), The Times’ back of the year, scored from the 1. After an extra-point kick by Ace, San Diego led, 7-0.
