FALL HIGHLIGHTS : Thousand Oaks Extended in Volleyball Win

The Thousand Oaks High girls volleyball team defeated La Reina, 11-15, 15-5, 15-12, 9-15, 15-7, in a nonleague match Thursday at Thousand Oaks that lasted three hours.

“That’s a pretty long time,” Lancer Coach Ron Beick said. “Most games are usually an hour and a half.”

Thousand Oaks (2-0), the defending Southern Section 2-A champion, took control of the match when junior Jamie Heggen served the Lancers to an 8-0 advantage in the fifth game. Heggen, who had six service aces and four kills, was assisted by outside hitter Julie Chellevold. Chellevold led all players with 25 kills and her sister, Amy, had four service aces.

“Amy does the important job as far as running our offensive plays,” Beick said. “But La Reina played excellent defense throughout the whole match. That kept them in the game.”

La Reina (0-1) created problems for the Lancers with its offense, too. Seniors Crista Grenat and Jenny Bouchard combined for 18 service aces.

“We can’t let that happen,” Beick said. “But it’s early in the season. I think we’re in pretty good shape as far as our stamina is concerned.”

Middle blocker Kristen Cleary had seven kills for Thousand Oaks.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Campbell Hall def. Newport Christian, 15-9, 12-15, 15-9, 15-7--Senior Nicole Holland had 15 kills and 21 assists to lead Campbell Hall in a nonleague win. Sophomore middle blocker Crissy Mills had five blocks and eight kills for Campbell Hall.

Burroughs def. Bell-Jeff, 11-15, 15-8, 15-12, 15-5--Burroughs’ Debbie Penney had 17 kills and 5 blocks and teammate Tracy McCauley had 8 kills in a nonleague match.

BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY

Crespi 24, Alemany 34--Mike Preston (16 minutes, 6 seconds) and Sean Huckaby (16:42) finished second and third in the three-mile course to lead Crespi at Alemany. The meet was the Del Rey league opener for both schools.

GIRLS TENNIS

Agoura 17, Camarillo 1--Trisha Silverman and Cindy Nielson, Agoura’s top two players, won five matches without dropping a game, and the doubles teams of junior Elise Nakawatase and freshman Kim Park won three matches without losing a game to lead the Chargers to an easy victory.

WATER POLO

El Rancho 14, Crespi 2--Crespi, which was 13-7 last year and runner-up in the Del Rey League, opened its season with a lopsided loss in the Bell Gardens Tournament at Montebello High.

Seniors Scott MacLean and John Beiner scored the Crespi goals. Goalkeeper Ed Beron had 10 saves. Crespi, which can now finish no higher than fifth in the 12-team tournament, plays its next match against Lakewood on Saturday.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Moorpark 25, Santa Paula 30--Moorpark’s Ricky DeLeon (17:37) finished first in the three-mile race. Ricky’s brother, Alfredo (17:55), finished second and John Terrazas (18:26) of Santa Paula finished third.

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Moorpark 16, Santa Paula 46--Moorpark’s April Beaver and Lisa Shotliff tied for first with a time of 23:35. Pam Beaver (24:16), April’s sister, finished second. It was Moorpark’s 16th straight dual-meet win.
