Fullerton Takes a 21-0 Lead, Holds Off Glendale for Victory

Share

Fullerton College ran for three touchdowns in the first half and survived a late Glendale rally to score a 21-14 nonconference win Saturday night at Fullerton.

The Vaqueros (0-2) narrowed a 21-0 halftime deficit with two third-quarter touchdowns, but a late goal-line stand helped the Hornets (1-1) preserve the victory.

Glendale had a first and goal at the Fullerton four on a 13-yard pass from quarterback Chris Smith to tailback Donnel Pumphrey with 2:06 left, but Fullerton stopped running back Albert Roberson for no gain.

Two incomplete passes later, Smith was sacked by two Hornets at the Fullerton 11 to seal the victory.

Fullerton took a 7-0 lead on its first series when tailback Andrew Greer capped an 88-yard, 12-play drive with a one-yard run. Greer, who ran for 29 yards in 5 carries in the series, was supported by quarterback Victor Williams, who completed 4 passes for 38 yards.

The Hornets extended their lead to 14-0 on their next possession. With 1:51 left in the first quarter, Greer’s backup, Tim Forehand, scored from the two.

Fullerton’s third touchdown--a five-yard run by fullback Ray Pallares with 2:38 in the half, was made possible one play earlier when a punt by Fullerton’s Matthew Waddell bounced off a Glendale player. The ball was recovered by Ernest Johnston at the Glendale 10.

An unsportsmanlike conduct call against the Vaqueros moved the ball into position for Pallares’ score.

El Camino 21, Saddleback 16--Quarterback Dan Speltz completed 24 of 33 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns to lead El Camino at Saddleback. Dwight Pickens caught touchdown passes of 9 and 10 yards for El Camino (2-0). El Camino’s Sean Smith caught 11 passes for 149 yards.
