Monestime Rushes Over Buena, 35-0

Before his team’s game against Thousand Oaks High, Buena Coach Mike Olgy wondered aloud whether his team had the stamina to stay with the physical Lancers for four quarters.

As it turned out, he had good reason to worry. The Bulldogs didn’t have the wind to make it past the first half.

Thousand Oaks quarterback Steve Sisco threw two touchdowns passes in the first 18 minutes and the Lancers went on to defeat Buena, 35-0, Saturday night at Larrabee Stadium in Ventura.

“I think we might have run them down, yeah,” Thousand Oaks Coach Bob Richards said after the Lancers’ second consecutive rout. “Buena has a physical offensive line, and I thought we got off the ball better this week than last. We improved on the offensive line.”

Last week, Thousand Oaks whipped Inglewood, 62-6.

Thousand Oaks broke on top of a game Buena team on the final play of the first quarter, when Sisco found receiver Lance Alverson in the right side of the end zone on third down and 13 on the Bulldogs’ 18.

The Lancers scored two more times in the half, on a 12-yard pass from Sisco to Mike Hutten and again on a reverse option. Receiver Guy Nelson took an inside handoff from Sisco, rolled right, and lofted a 29-yard scoring throw to Alverson.

Marc Monestime gained 176 yards on 20 carries, including a 42-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, as Thousand Oaks outgained Buena, 290-41, on the ground. Monestime, the Marmonte League’s leading rusher last season, has 294 yards in two games.

Middle linebacker Mack Humphrey played his second straight strong game for the Lancers. He sacked Buena quarterback Dan White twice and clogged the middle of the Bulldogs’ offense.

“I think we’re coming along good,” Humphrey said. “I’m glad we got the shutout.”

Thousand Oaks (2-0) scored its final touchdown when Mike Moore dove over from the 1-yard line late in the third quarter.

Junior kicker John Mogler, filling in for the injured Sean Cheevers, made five of five conversion kicks. Mogler is 10 for 10 in two games.

Sisco finished 5 for 10 for 63 yards and two touchdowns. Mike Moore rushed for 68 yards on 10 carries.

Thousand Oaks scored at will despite 85 yards in penalties.

It didn’t take long for the Lancers to call out for their next opponent. Some of the players stood at midfield and shouted “Bring on Canyon!”

Thousand Oaks has lost eight straight to the Cowboys, including their only two losses last season.
