Southland Roundup : Redlands Stops Skid With ‘Hail Mary’ Pass

Redlands’ 11-game losing streak came to a dramatic end Saturday, as Chris Hagle threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Fernando Guana on the game’s final play to give the Bulldogs a 30-27 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the teams’ Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Redlands.

Pomona-Pitzer (1-1) appeared to have the game won when Edward Irick threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Hee with 10 seconds remaining. But Redlands returned the kickoff to its 42, and after a 16-yard pass, Hagle threw downfield to a wide-open Guana, who caught it at the two-yard line and walked into the end zone.

Irick completed 26 of 42 passes for 322 yards with 3 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Hagle finished with 6 completions in 19 attempts for 206 yards. Redlands’ Ruffin Patterson ran for 3 touchdowns.

Claremont-Mudd 33, Occidental 30--Chris Dabrow ran 25 yards for a touchdown to give the Stags an overtime win over the Tigers in an SCIAC game at Claremont.

Occidental (1-1-1 overall, 1-1 in SCIAC) had sent the game into overtime when Mark Krajnik threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Mike Sandlin with 20 seconds remaining. The Tigers took the lead in overtime on a field goal, but one play later, Dabrow scored his third touchdown of the game for the win.

Dabrow, who had 124 yards and 2 touchdowns in the first quarter, finished with 199 yards in 31 carries. Claremont-Mudd (1-1 overall, 1-0 in SCIAC) had 317 yards rushing. Krajnik led Occidental, completing 13 of 21 attempts for 179 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Cal Lutheran 19, CS Hayward 6--Tom Bonds threw for 288 yards and 1 touchdown and also ran for a score to lead the Kingsmen over the Pioneers in a nonconference game at Thousand Oaks.

CS Northridge 13, Sonoma State 6--Rob Huffman threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Keith Wright as the Matadors struggled to a nonconference win over the Cossacks at Northridge. Huffman completed only 4 of 16 passes.
