San Diego Community College Football : Southwestern Rushers Face Palomar Defense

The Mission Conference’s top rushing team and the team best at stopping the rush meet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday when Southwestern College plays Palomar at Palomar High School.

Southwestern, averaging 203 yards a game rushing, is led by running back Darrell Crain. He leads the conference in rushing with 227 yards in 25 carries. Tony Herd, also from Southwestern, is fourth in the conference in rushing with 156 yards in 23 carries.

Palomar leads the conference in defense against the rush, giving up only two yards a game. Monterey Peninsula and San Diego Mesa managed only 4 net yards in 51 carries against Palomar.

Palomar linebacker Albert Sega had 10 tackles, including a quarterback sack, and two fumble recoveries against Mesa.

Palomar is led on offense by quarterback Mark Heintschel, who completed 17 of 32 passes for 214 yards and also rushed for 66 yards in 13 carries in the Comets’ 34-16 victory over Mesa last Saturday.

In other games:

Grossmont, which lost to Saddleback, 35-0, last week, is at San Diego City at 7:30 p.m., and San Diego Mesa plays at Citrus at 7:30 p.m.
