City Palisades 28, Beverly Hills 24--Perry Klein threw a 17-yard scoring pass to Harold Champion with 9:59 remaining to give the Dolphins (1-1) the win over The Times’ No. 9-rated Southern Section team in a nonleague game at Beverly Hills. Klein, a junior who completed 28 of 47 passes for 378 yards and 4 touchdowns last week in the season opener, connected on 27 of 37 passes for 409 yards and 3 touchdowns to hand the Normans (3-1) their first loss. Willie Crawford of Beverly Hills had touchdown runs of 11 and 1 yards. Leading the Dolphin defense was Louis Randall, who had eight tackles. The Normans had the ball on their 38-yard line with 1:22 remaining but couldn’t score. They advanced to the Palisades’ seven with five seconds left, but Jason Goldberg’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete.

Locke 43, Washington 25--Darian Hagan of Locke gained 296 yards rushing in 33 carries and scored twice on runs of 3 and 65 yards in the nonleague game at Locke. Dante Woodard had two touchdowns for the Saints on runs of 53 and 13 yards. Locke (1-1) also got 114 yards in 15 carries from Donovan Moore. Washington is 0-0-1.

North Hollywood 36, Verdugo Hills 28--Chip Grant scored his fifth touchdown of the game on a 38-yard run with 3:04 remaining to give the Huskies a nonleague win at Verdugo Hills. Grant finished with 320 yards in 28 carries. In two games, Grant has amassed 571 yards and 11 touchdowns in 47 carries. Darren Fitzgerald of Verdugo Hills completed 16 of 29 passes for 241 yards and 3 touchdowns. Robert Strickland caught 7 of Fitzgerald’s passes for 109 yards. North Hollywood is 2-0, and Verdugo Hills is 0-2.

Southern Section Eisenhower 40, San Gorgonio 0--Dennis Collier and Daryl McChristian led the Eagles (4-0), The Times’ No. 3-ranked team, to an easy victory over the Spartans (1-2-1) in a Citrus Belt League opener at Eisenhower. Collier rushed for 217 yards and 3 touchdowns in 14 carries, and McChristian rushed for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns in 14 carries. Quarterback Steve Hoak completed 12 of 21 passes for 147 yards and 1 touchdown. He has not thrown an interception this year.

Bishop Amat 10, St. Francis 7--Steve Clark kicked a 32-yard field goal with two seconds left to give the Lancers a victory at Bishop Amat. Wide receiver Stephone Pace of Bishop Amat scored the game’s first touchdown in the second quarter on a 71-yard double reverse. St. Francis tied the game with five minutes remaining on an eight-yard run by Francisco Diaz. Bishop Amat (4-0), The Times’ No. 4-ranked team, was led by J. R. Phillips, who completed 12 of 23 passes for 152 yards. Pace had 6 receptions for 74 yards. St. Francis is 0-4.

Canyon Country Canyon 10, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 8--Rod Baltau’s 48-yard touchdown pass to Chris Peery broke a scoreless tie in the third quarter and led the Cowboys (3-1) over the Knights (2-2) at Canyon. Tom Gahry’s 39-yard field goal with five minutes remaining increased Canyon’s lead to 10-0. Notre Dame averted a shutout when Morgan Shepherd threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Mike Rimkunas with 2:21 left.

Baldwin Park 31, Charter Oak 22--Kirk Gair completed 14 of 25 passes for 311 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead the Braves over the Chargers at Charter Oak. Gair threw touchdown passes of 44 and 67 yards to Bob Levesque to give Baldwin Park (3-1) a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter. In the second quarter, Gair threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Javier Jimenez for a 21-0 lead and, after a turnover, the Braves made it 28-0 at halftime on another 19-yard pass from Gair to Jimenez. Charter Oak scored in the third quarter on a 76-yard interception return by Mark Harris, and then added another touchdown to make it 28-16 entering the fourth quarter. Charter Oak (3-1) closed within 28-22 with 10 minutes remaining on a 2-yard run by Russell Sprague, but Baldwin Park clinched the win with 6:36 remaining on a 27-yard field goal by Sal Hernandez. Levesque caught 5 passes for 175 yards, and Jimenez caught 6 passes for 122 yards.

Bell Gardens 51, California 0--The Lancers rolled up 350 total yards while limiting the Condors to 16 in a Whitmont League rout at California. Bell Gardens (3-1) rushed for 212 yards as David Manqueros led the way with 91 yards in 8 carries, including touchdowns runs of 31 and 1. Jose Rosas added 43 yards in 9 carries. The Lancer defense held California (2-2) to minus 29 yards rushing and 45 yards passing. Santos Barrentos also returned an interception 28 yards for a touchdown.

Central 31, Compton 3--Gerald Robinson spearheaded Central with 219 yards and 3 touchdowns in 22 carries. Central, the top-ranked team in the Southeastern Conference, is 4-0. Compton is 1-3.

El Rancho 41, La Serna 0--Ralph De La Torre ran for 109 yards and 4 touchdowns in 13 carries to lead the Dons (3-1) over the Lancers (0-4) in a Whitmont League game at El Rancho. De La Torre scored on runs of 1, 18, 14, and 3 to give him 9 touchdowns this year.

Burbank Burroughs 44, Glendale 2--The Indians (4-0), The Times’ No. 12-ranked team, scored 28 points in the second quarter and routed the Dynamiters (0-3-1) in a nonleague game at Glendale. Doug Dragomer rushed for 4 touchdowns and 100 yards in 15 carries for Burroughs, and quarterback Jeff Barrett completed 15 of 20 passes for 224 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jason Peitel had 8 receptions for 126 yards.

Trabuco Hills 28, San Clemente 13--The Mustangs scored touchdowns on their first possessions in the nonleague game at San Clemente. Tight end Mark Barnes opened the scoring on a 14-yard reception from John Barnes. San Clemente evened the count on Kevin Harrison’s 11-yard run, but Trabuco Hills bounced back with touchdowns from Jeff Dooley on a 34-yard pass play from Barnes and Greg Sparks’ 10-yard run. Barnes finished with 223 yards on 11 of 17 completions. Trabuco Hills, ranked No. 6 in the Desert-Mountain Conference, is 4-0. San Clemente is 2-2.

Quartz Hill 29, Royal 12--Gerg Albaugh opened the game with a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. By the time he left the game in the fourth quarter, he had rushed 12 times for 87 yards and 2 touchdowns and completed 2 of 4 passes for 46 yards and 1 touchdown. Royal’s Chris Sinsheimer completed 12 of 23 passes for 146 yards and 1 touchdown, a 24-yard pass to wide receiver James Jones with 1:48 to play in the third quarter to end Quartz Hills’ shutout string at 14 quarters. Quartz Hill, ranked No. 8 in the Coastal Conference, is 4-0. Royal is 1-2-1.

Santa Ana 27, Mission Viejo 7--The Diablos were able to stop Santa Ana running back Robert Lee, but the Saints countered with quarterback George Tuioti, who completed 8 of 15 passes for 134 yards and 1 touchdown, and Rob Fanti, who had 6 catches for 80 yards. Lee, who averaged more than 200 yards in his last seven games last season, carried 11 times for just 23 yards in the nonleague game at Mission Viejo. Santa Ana and Mission Viejo are both 3-1.
