San Fernando Rumbles Past Dorsey, 32-6

For the past 15 years, opponents have prepared for the quaking rumble of the San Fernando High wishbone offense.

Charles White and Anthony Davis were just two of the running backs who sent shock waves through opposing defenses. Both went on to successful careers at USC and later played as professionals.

But while the San Fernando wishbone is no longer around to register touchdowns or Richter-scale readings, the new pass-oriented offense is ringing up some impressive numbers on the scoreboard.

The Tigers improved to 2-0, upending Dorsey, 32-6, Friday night in a nonleague game at San Fernando.

Quarterback Joe Mauldin led the way, completing 9 of 21 passes for 161 yards and 2 touchdowns. Mauldin, under a heavy rush all night, also led the Tigers in rushing, scrambling for 77 yards on 11 carries.

Mauldin threw a touchdown pass in each half. He hit Brent Huff over the middle on the last play of the first half, and the senior running back made two terrific cutbacks to score from 35 yards out as time expired.

Andy Kapuscinski’s kick gave San Fernando a 19-0 lead at intermission.

Mauldin threw the other touchdown pass late in the third quarter, hitting Tommy Howard in the end zone from 23 yards out.

Dorsey (1-1), which scored two touchdowns in the final five minutes to defeat Locke last week, scored on a 1-yard run by quarterback Roman Foster with 8:22 to play.

Backup quarterback Michael Wynn replaced Mauldin in the fourth quarter and ran 24 yards for San Fernando’s final touchdown.
