EL Dorado High School’s Phillip Nevin kicked a 26-yard field goal with 1:07 remaining as the seventh-ranked Golden Hawks salvaged a 13-13 tie with Katella in the Empire League opener for both schools at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.

“I don’t like ties,” said Carl Sweet, El Dorado coach. “We came here to win a ballgame, but for Katella, this is considered a moral victory.”

With the Knights (4-1-1, 0-1-1) trailing, 10-7, in the second quarter, quarterback Jeff Yourstone scored on an 11-yard quarterback keeper that put Katella ahead, 13-10. Bubba Clester’s extra point attempt was blocked by El Dorado lineman Brian Tomazick.

El Dorado (5-0-1, 0-0-1) took a 10-7 halftime lead after quarterback Kevin Schula, returning from a foot injury that had sidelined him for three weeks, scored on a one-yard sneak.

Nevin scored El Dorado’s first points with a 52-yard field goal. Katella countered on its first play from scrimmage when running back Jeremy Sherman raced 71 yards for a touchdown to give the Knights a 7-3 lead.

Sherman rushed for 113 yards in 7 carries and teammate Joe Tastorello gained 109 in 20 carries.

El Dorado’s Schula completed 7 of 16 passes for 122 yards and running back Chris Olson gained 96 yards in 26 carries.

“We are in control of our own destiny,” Sweet said. “We have to win the rest of our games and let everything else take care of itself.”

Katella outgained El Dorado in total offense, 277-235.
