Briefly--Bonita Vista 24, Southwest 20
AVOCADO San Pasqual 19, Carlsbad 0--Juan Garcia ran 26 times for 171 yards and caught a 5-yard pass for a touchdown from John Busch at San Pasqual. Dave Emerson added 76 yards in 18 carries and a 3-yard touchdown run for San Pasqual (2-4, 2-1). Carlsbad (3-3, 1-2) was held to 68 total yards as San Pasqual had six sacks. Linebacker Ric Aschbrenner had two sacks. Chris Nottoli had field goals of 22 and 24 yards.
San Marcos 17, Escondido 0----As a quarterback, Rick Ebert threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to tailback Scott Ashby in the first quarter at San Marcos. As a fullback, Ebert ran nine yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Joel Neri added a 37-yard field goal. San Marcos is 2-2-1, 2-1; Escondido is 0-6, 0-3.
Oceanside 12, Ramona 0--Trailing 6-0, Ramona had first and goal with less than a minute to play. After two incompletions, Oceanside defensive lineman Time Sittala hit quarterback Jason Gonzalez as he was throwing. The ball was intercepted and returned to the Oceanside 40. On the next play, Anthony Morrow threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Lee Strai.
Briefly--Rancho Buena Vista 22, El Camino 6
CITY CENTRAL Lincoln 7, Hoover 6--Host Lincoln (4-2, 1-0) escaped a tie when Hoover kicker Stacy Domaille’s extra point was blocked with less than four minutes remaining. Darren Wagner’s 89-yard run for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and Freddie Stokes’ extra point put Lincoln ahead. Hoover (1-5, 0-1) scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Domaille to Darral Jamison. The snap on the extra point was bad and the kick was low, into the line.
Crawford 35, San Diego 6--Keith Gilbert completed 14 of 14 passes for 228 yards and 1 touchdown to lead visiting Crawford (4-2, 1-0). Gilbert threw an 11-yard scoring pass to Jeremy Horton and ran 6 yards yards for another score. Sean Mitchell scored on a pair of three-yard runs for Crawford. San Diego (0-6, 0-1) scored its only touchdown in the second quarter on a four-yard run by Terrence Spells.
CITY EASTERN Point Loma 25, Madison 13--Mike Bennett completed 8 of 12 passes for 150 yards and 1 touchdown as host Point Loma (6-0-0, 1-0-0) won despite having its vaunted running attack slowed. Madison (1-4-1, 0-1-0) limited the Pointers to 99 yards rushing and held Kelby Downey, the county’s No. 5 rusher, to 54 yards on 26 carries. However, Bennett connected with tight end Bob Brasher 4 times for 119 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown. Madison, trailing 19-13 midway through the fourth quarter, had a chance to take the lead before Trinell Thornes’ second interception of the game stopped the drive on the Point Loma 13-yard line. Brad Eaddy completed 15 of 32 passes for 202 yards and 2 touchdowns for Madison.
Morse 24, Patrick Henry 3--Mike Liera completed 6 of 12 passes for 226 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead visiting Morse (4-2, 1-0). Liera threw scoring passes of 56 and 96 yards to Melvin Maxwell. Morse led, 10-3, midway through the third quarter when Darrell Lewis intercepted a pass by Patrick Henry quarterback Lance Lowry at the Morse one-yard line. Two plays later, Liera hit Maxwell on the 96-yard scoring play. Derrick Greene scored Morse’s final touchdown on a 57-yard run in the fourth quarter. Patrick Henry (1-4, 0-1) limited Larry Maxey, the county’s leading rusher, to 48 yards on 12 carries.
Mira Mesa 27, Serra 0--Ricky Hanson scored on touchdown runs of 46, 51 and 1 yard to lead Mira Mesa (5-1, 1-0). Klaus Owens scored the other touchdown on a 9-yard pass from Ed Allison. It was the third shutout this season for Mira Mesa. Serra (1-5, 0-1) has lost five in row.
CITY WESTERN La Jolla 40, Mission Bay 0----La Jolla scored 33 points in the second quarter in a game played at Mesa College. In the second quarter, quarterback John Tribolet threw touchdown passes of 22, 75 and 47 yards to wide receiver Brad Raulston and ran 2 yards for another score. Safety Sean Edwards returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown. Tribolet completed 7 of 10 passes for 177 yards and 4 touchdowns. His fourth touchdown pass was an eight-yarder to wide receiver Adams Lenain in the third quarter. La Jolla is 5-1, 1-0; Mission Bay drops to 1-5, 0-1.
Clairemont 3, University City 3--University City’s Scott Nunes kicked a 32-yard field goal with 2 seconds left in the first half for UC (1-3-1, 0-0-1). Edmundo Rodriguez kicked a 35-yard field goal with less than 3 minutes left in the game for Clairemont (3-2-1, 0-0-1).
USDHS 23, Kearny 18--Brian Duplesis rushed for 118 yards on 20 carries and scored one touchdown to lead host USDHS (6-0, 1-0). Steve Walker scored a pair of touchdowns for the Dons. Kearny (0-6, 0-1) took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a 28-yard interception return by Lester Huff. USDHS regained the lead, 10-6, at halftime, but Kearny went ahead, 13-10, on a 63-yard run by Tosh Hugeley midway through the third quarter. Walker’s touchdowns gave USDHS the comeback win.
GROSSMONT 3-A Briefly--Granite Hills 41, Santana 7
METRO-SOUTH BAY Coronado 10, Castle Park 7--Brian Coffman threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Rich Bledsoe late in the third quarter to give visiting Coronado (6-0, 1-0) the victory. Castle Park (0-3-2, 0-1) had taken a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a 15-yard run by Brian Bane. Bob Watson kicked a 35-yard field goal to pull Coronado within 7-3 early in the third quarter.
Briefly--Mar Vista 44, Marian 14
PALOMAR Vista 33, Torrey Pines 3--Vista’s Marc Jones rushed for 138 yards and 3 touchdowns on 16 carries to lead host Vista (5-1, 3-0). Jones scored on an 8-yard run to put Vista ahead, 7-0. After a Torrey Pines field goal, Jones scored on a 68-yard run with less than a minute to play in the first half. Jones also scored on a 6-yard run in the third quarter. Vista quarterback Billy Faraimo rushed for a 14-yard touchdown and threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Dale Price. Vista rushed for 230 yards and held Torrey Pines (3-2-1, 1-2) to 24 yards rushing.
Poway 14, San Dieguito 7--San Dieguito drove 70-yards for a touchdown on its first possession but failed to move the ball thereafter. Sean Eagle scored on a 4-yard run for visiting Poway (3-2-1, 1-2), culminating a 70-yard second quarter drive. In the third quarter, Poway recovered an errant snap and drove 40 yards with Mike Beam scoring on a 4-yard run. Brad Herzog ran for the 2-point conversion. San Dieguito is 4-2, 0-2.
NONLEAGUE Fallbrook 50, CETYS 8----Fallbrook quarterback Mike Turiace, the leading passer in the county, completed 10 of 17 passes for 4 touchdowns and 86 yards in less than three quarters. Running back Aaron Tapia scored on runs of 9 and 5 yards, running back Bobby Waid scored on passes of 11 and 13 yards from Turiace, Jeff Pack scored on an 8-yard pass from Turiace and free safety Greg Frinell returned an interception 43 yards for a score.
Montgomery 33, Hilltop 14--Kevin Crawford returned a kickoff 95 yards for one score, returned an interception 90 yards for another and ran for two more touchdowns to lead visiting Montgomery (3-3). Crawford scored on touchdown runs of 49 and 5 yards and totaled 73 yards rushing on 6 carries. Montgomery’s other touchdown came on an 85-yard kickoff return by Greg Sallee. Chris Costello scored on a 39-yard run and Chad Boyd passed 15 yards to John Barone to account for Hilltop’s touchdowns.
Grossmont 7, Monte Vista 0--Mark Stillwell threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Tom Liles midway through the second quarter as host Grossmont (2-4) beat Monte Vista (1-4-1).
Helix 14, El Capitan 7----Helix wide receiver Eddie Evilsizor scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass from reserve quarterback Danny Tiumalu, picked up a fumble by teammate Spike Mitchell and ran about 30 yards for another touchdown and caught a two-point conversion from Tiumalu. El Capitan running back Bryan Palmer ran two yards for a score in the final quarter at El Capitan. Helix is 5-1; El Capitan 4-2.
