ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Angelus League : Ramstack’s Attack Leads Mater Dei to 30-6 Victory

Share

Mater Dei High School has always relied on a strong passing game, and it was certainly evident Thursday night.

Mater Dei quarterback Mark Ramstack threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another to lead the Monarchs to a 30-6 victory over Angelus League rival St. Bernard, in front of 2,000 in Santa Ana Stadium.

The Monarchs (6-1 overall and 2-0 in league) opened up a 21-0 halftime lead, with Ramstack scoring on a quarterback sneak at 8:21 of the second quarter. He later connected with wide receiver Keith Labus for a 23-yard touchdown pass that just cleared the outstretched arms of St. Bernard defender Eric Nelson.

Early in the third quarter, Ramstack fired for his final score, a two-yard, play-action pass to Kevin Rembert, for a 27-0 lead. Rembert, a starting forward on Mater Dei’s basketball team who joined the football team just three weeks ago, caught five passes for 40 yards. Ramstack finished 13 of 22 for 214 yards.

St. Bernard (3-4, 0-2) scored on a 60-yard pass from quarterback Calvin Maspero to Nelson with 2:20 remaining in the third quarter.

Monarch running back Robert Clifford, who scored three touchdowns last week in a victory over Bishop Montgomery, opened the scoring with a five-yard run, eight minutes into the game.

Mater Dei outgained St. Bernard, 355 yards to 219, and limited the Vikings to 48 yards rushing.
