Share

Point Loma High School is clearly a football team on a roll.

Against Mira Mesa in a key City Eastern League game Friday night, the Pointers ripped San Diego County’s top-ranked defensive unit for more than 300 yards of total offense and limited the Marauder offense to 93 total yards in a 27-0 victory at Mira Mesa High.

Point Loma (7-0, 2-0) started its assault on its first possession, driving 63 yards for a score, and continued its dominance throughout the game. Mira Mesa’s offense crossed midfield only once.

Pointer quarterback Mike Bennett connected on his first four passes of the game, helping to set up David Cipranic’s one-yard touchdown run 10 minutes into the game. Bennett completed 9 of 12 passes for 166 yards.

Point Loma’s offense moved easily despite the fact that its leading rusher, Kelby Downey, sat out the game with an injured right knee.

Downey’s replacements, Luis Guillory and Ron Evans, combined for 80 yards on the ground and opened the passing lanes for Bennett and tight end Bob Brasher, who caught 4 passes for 89 yards.

Even when the Pointer offense bogged down, good things happened. With Point Loma leading 21-0 late in the third quarter, Cipranic tried to run the ball in from the Mira Mesa eight-yard line. He was stopped in the backfield but lateraled to a startled Bennett before he went down. Bennett ran for a touchdown.

The Pointer defense, which limited Mira Mesa quarterback Ed Allison to 33 yards on 3 of 13 passes, also scored. Steve Cota sacked Allison and the ball popped into the hands of Israel Stanley, who ran 10 yards for a score.

“We knew we would be playing without Kelby so the rest of the players did a little extra,” Bennett said. “We have a lot of good players and we knew we could do well without him.”

Mira Mesa (5-2, 1-1) had allowed only 35 points in its first six games.
