El Camino College, in the driver’s seat in the South Coast Conference football race, plays a rare day game Saturday with a 1:30 contest at Compton. The Warriors, 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference, are rated second in the state and fourth nationally. Compton is 2-4 overall, 0-3 in the conference. El Camino is coming off its closest call of the season, a 27-26 victory over Fullerton that featured 18 tackles and an interception by defensive back Billy Hughley. Quarterback Dan Speltz has passed for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns. His top receiver, Dwight Pickens, has 27 receptions for 535 yards and 7 TDs.

In Southern California Athletic Conference football action, Harbor College will be looking to break a four-game losing streak with a 7:30 home game against Chaffey, while Southwest College will be at home at 1 p.m. against Rio Hondo. Harbor is 2-4 in the SCAC and 2-5 overall. Southwest is 2-4 and 3-4.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team closes out the regular season this weekend in the UC Santa Barbara National Women’s Soccer Cup. The Lady Toros, riding a school-record seven-game winning streak at 11-4-1, will play Puget Sound on Friday and Southern Methodist on Saturday. The eight-team tournament includes many of the top teams in the West and may be instrumental in determining NCAA playoff selections Sunday. Michele Salas has 13 goals and 6 assists.

The Dominguez Hills men’s team plays its last home game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. contest against Cal State Bakersfield. The Toros are 2-2-2 in the CCAA and 4-8-3 overall. Sophomore Joe Flanagan, who scored two overtime goals in a 2-0 victory over Chapman, is third in the CCAA in scoring with 13 goals and 2 assists.

The Loyola Marymount University women’s volleyball team, after taking a 10-day break from competition, returns to action with West Coast Athletic Conference matches Friday at Santa Clara and Saturday at the University of San Francisco. The Lions are 3-3 and in fourth place the WCAC and 9-14 overall and have a chance to move up. Their immediate leaders are USF at 5-3 and Santa Clara at 5-2. Pepperdine, which leads the league at 6-0, also plays both Bay area teams this weekend.
