UCSD Gets 1st-Round Win in Volleyball Tournament
The UC San Diego women’s volleyball team defeated Cal State San Bernardino in the first round of the UC San Diego round-robin tournament Friday night at UCSD.
UCSD (23-3), the nation’s top-ranked Division III team, defeated No. 8 San Bernardino (28-6), 15-10, 2-15, 15-6, 15-11.
In the tournament’s other first-round match, La Verne defeated Claremont, 16-14, 15-9, 17-15.
Two rounds will be played today in Triton Pavilion. UCSD will play Claremont at 11 a.m. and La Verne will meet San Bernardino at 1 p.m. In the evening, San Bernardino will play Claremont at 5 and UCSD will meet La Verne at 8.
In other matches:
UC Santa Barbara 3, San Diego State 0--The Aztecs (10-12, 5-7) held but one lead the entire night, 3-0, in the third game of a 15-7, 15-6, 15-10 Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. defeat. SDSU’s Angelica Jackson had a match-leading 18 kills. UCSB (17-11, 6-3) was led by Judy Bellomo’s 16 kills and Liz Towne’s 4 aces.
Portland 3, USD 1--The University of Portland (6-14, 3-4) defeated the University of San Diego.
