Pairings Are Set for Prep Playoffs in Three Sports

Newport Harbor High School, the top-ranked team in the Southern Section 5-A and Sea View League champion, will meet Santa Monica (6-5) in the first round of the Southern Section girls’ 5-A volleyball playoffs Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Newport Harbor.

The Sailors (16-0) are the top-seeded team in the 5-A playoffs, which start Thursday. Other featured 5-A matches, starting at 7:30 p.m.:

Corona del Mar (14-2), the second-seeded team and Sea View League runner-up, plays Laguna Hills (11-5) at Corona del Mar.

Woodbridge (11-3), the fourth-seeded team and Pacific Coast League champion, plays Buena (10-6) at Woodbridge.

In 4-A first-round games, Irvine (12-2), the second-seeded team and the South Coast League champion, will play host to Rancho Alamitos (7-7) at Irvine, and El Toro (12-2), the fourth-seeded team and the South Coast League runner-up, will play Bolsa Grande (9-7) at El Toro. Both 4-A games will be Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

In 3-A, La Habra (13-1), the third-seeded team and Freeway League champion, will play Cajon (10-4) Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at La Habra.

In water polo:

Sunny Hills, the top-ranked team in 4-A and the Freeway League champion, will meet Canyon (17-10) of Anaheim Hills in a first-round match Friday at 3:15 p.m. at Sunny Hills.

The Lancers (24-2) are the top-seeded team in the 4-A playoffs, which begin Friday at 3:15 p.m. Other featured 4-A matches:

Newport Harbor (22-4), the second-seeded team and Sea View League champion, plays Long Beach Poly (12-7) at Newport Harbor.

Corona del Mar (23-4), fourth-seeded and Sea View League runner-up, plays Millikan (14-10) at Corona del Mar.

In 3-A first-round games, all Thursday at 3:15 p.m., San Clemente (21-5), the top-seeded team, will play host to Crescenta Valley (11-13) and Los Alamitos (23-4), the second-seeded team, will play host to Beverly Hills. Also, El Dorado (13-12), the fourth-seeded team, will play host to Glendale (11-11).

In 2-A, Costa Mesa (19-6), the top-seeded team and Pacific Coast League champion, will play host to Chadwick (7-6) Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

In girls’ tennis:

First-round matches, scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m.:

In 4-A, third-seeded Corona del Mar (16-2-1) will play host to Mission Viejo (8-8). In 3-A, third-seeded Laguna Hills (18-0) will play host to Charter Oak (11-4). In 2-A, second-seeded Valencia (12-4) will play host to Pacifica (12-2).
