STATWATCH : Renfro’s Portfolio May Equal That of Bonds

With every passing game, it becomes more difficult for Hart quarterback Darren Renfro to avoid comparisons to Jim Bonds.

“The only time I think about it is when I’m asked about it,” said Renfro, Hart’s quarterback.

After Renfro’s performance in Hart’s 31-0 win over Alhambra on Friday, people with inquiring minds want to know: Is Renfro as good as Bonds, Hart’s career passing leader?

“He was better,” Renfro said.

Statistics suggest otherwise. Renfro completed 27 of 38 passes for 335 yards against Alhambra--all career highs--with three touchdown passes. The senior left-hander has passed for 1,989 yards in eight games and is on a pace to become Hart’s single-season passing leader. Bonds, now redshirting as a freshman at UCLA, passed for 3,153 yards in 14 games last season, but had only 1,693 yards after eight games.

“I’m on track,” Renfro said. “If we play 14 games, I’ll break it.”

Hart Coach Rick Scott would rather avoid comparisons.

“Other than the fact that they’re both great athletes, they’re two different quarterbacks,” Scott said.

Defense: When Crespi running backs Russell White and J. J. Lasley meet the Loyola defense Saturday, something can be expected to give. Loyola (8-0) has allowed only 371 rushing yards and 31 points all season. White has rushed for 1,487 yards and Lasley has 621, a total of 2,108. White has scored 28 touchdowns and Lasley has 11; Loyola has allowed only three.

The Cubs have outscored three Del Rey League opponents, 36-2. The Cubs have allowed no more than 10 points in a game; Crespi (7-0-1) has 346 points and averages 43.3 a game. Loyola has yielded 569 passing yards; Crespi quarterbacks Rob O’Byrne (822 yards) and Ron Redell (319) have 1,141 yards and eight touchdowns.

Two weeks ago, Hart held the dubious distinction of having the worst defense among Valley-area Southern Section teams, yielding 335 yards a game. But after consecutive shutouts over Burroughs (19-0) and Alhambra (31-0), the Indians are allowing an average of 270 yards a game and have passed six teams to improve to 20th. . . . Bell-Jeff, which started the season 5-0-1, has been shut out in two consecutive games. When St. Genevieve blanked the Guards, 15-0, Saturday night, the Valiants moved ahead of Bell-Jeff into second place in the Santa Fe League. St. Genevieve has recorded three consecutive shutout wins. . . . Excluding a 48-0 loss to Carpinteria, Oak Park has outscored opponents, 196-33. In those seven games, the Eagles have recorded three shutouts.

Passing: Reseda quarterback Coley Kyman completed his first three passes--of 59, 41 and 32 yards--for touchdowns in the Regents’ 34-6 victory over North Hollywood. The Huskies’ James Crump wasn’t as successful--he had three of his first four passes intercepted.

Interceptions: Granada Hills tight end Sean Brown and receiver Kyle Jan rank No. 1 and No. 2 among Valley City Section teams with 36 and 33 receptions. They double as defensive backs and also lead area City teams in interceptions. Brown is tied for first with four and Jan is tied for second with three.

Scoring: For the second week in a row, Reseda scored four touchdowns in a 13-minute span. Against North Hollywood, the Regents scored on each of their first four possessions. The week before, Reseda scored four touchdowns in the last 13 minutes against Sylmar to win, 36-26. . . . Camarillo placekicker Earnest Rittenhouse has not missed on seven extra-point attempts since replacing incumbent Sean Garcia seven games into the season.

With a 7-3 upset of Canoga Park on Friday, Chatsworth moved into a four-way tie for second place in the Sunset League. But the Chancellors’ offense hasn’t scored a point in league games. In Chatsworth’s 22-6 loss to Birmingham, Bryan Addison scored on a 73-yard punt return. Against Canoga Park, he scored on a 92-yard kickoff return.

Rushing: Three current Marmonte League running backs--Thousand Oaks’ Marc Monestime, Camarillo’s Bill Bell and Simi Valley’s Tony Kerr--are their school’s career rushing leaders. Kerr broke M. J. Nelson’s record Friday against Camarillo. On Oct. 24, against Newbury Park, Bell eclipsed the record of Louis Perez, an assistant coach at Camarillo. On his current pace, Monestime will break the Ventura County career rushing record Nov. 13 against Simi Valley. Hilria Johnson of Channel Islands set the record from 1977-79.
