HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Wild-Card Win Sends Calabasas Into Playoffs

If Kristy Olson was pleased with her Calabasas volleyball team’s performance Tuesday night, she sure wasn’t showing it.

Calabasas, which defeated Bishop Diego, 15-9, 15-10, 11-15, 11-15, 15-8, in a Southern Section 3-A wild card game at Calabasas, seemed to lack the polish that carried last season’s team into the 3-A final. The Coyotes will play at La Canada in the first round of the playoffs Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

“Offensively we shut down,” Olson said. “It was our inability to keep the ball in the court. And they poured it on in the third and fourth games.”

But in the fifth game, Bishop Diego was overmatched.

Lisa Suwara recorded many of her match-high 19 kills in the final game. Suwara, who sets and attacks from the outside, took advantage of a weak Bishop Diego defense that allowed the Coyotes an 11-2 advantage in the fifth game.

“I think we were a little intimidated,” Bishop Diego Coach Matt Daughters said. “It took us a long time to come back. Not until the third game did we start to put things together.”

But by the time Bishop Diego (9-6) began to assemble its offense, Calabasas had established its defense.

The Coyotes (6-7) had 53 digs, including a team-high 19 by Shari Sakamoto. Suwara had 14 and Leanne Kenney and Andrea Fatur each had 10.

Kenney was also a force at the net where she blocked effectively and recorded 16 kills.

Said Daughters: “We were pumped up, but they were just a little too much tonight.”

Calabasas jumped out to early leads in each of the first two games. But the Cardinals fought back in the third game. Trailing, 11-7, Bishop Diego scored eight unanswered points.

The Cardinals’ momentum continued into fourth game as they jumped out to an 8-2 lead. Calabasas tied the score, 9-9, but the Cardinals put the game away behind the play of Christina Cabe and Lindsay Baker.

SOCCER

Reseda 5, San Fernando 0--Paul Vargas scored five goals in the nonleague match at Reseda.

Vargas’ scoring spree lifted the Regents’ record to 2-1. San Fernando is 3-1.

“Paul is an aggressive player with a hard boot and lots of heart,” Reseda Coach George Hull said. “His alert play and positioning resulted in his five goals.”

Vargas is also the punter for Reseda’s football team.

Taft 4, Monroe 3--Sophomore Marvin Davila scored the game-winner with 10 minutes left to keep Taft (4-0) unbeaten. Greg Hartsock scored twice for Monroe (2-1).

Chatsworth 4, Granada Hills 1--Craig Colgan scored two goals to lead the Chancellors to the nonleague win at Granada Hills. Rob Kodama and Joey Bird also scored for Chatsworth (3-1).

Poly 4, Westchester 0--Poly finished its nonleague schedule with a shutout at Westchester. The Parrots (3-0) were led by Juan Carlos Veloz with two goals. Santos Mariscal and Juan Nambo each added a goal.

Cleveland 4, Van Nuys 1--Robert Abrams scored two goals and Wilber Castro and Todd Lunbeck each scored one as the Cavaliers (3-0-1) won the nonleague match.

VOLLEYBALL

Cleveland d. Reseda, 12-15, 15-4, 15-1. Nancy Nicholls had 17 kills and five aces to lead the Cavaliers at Reseda.

TENNIS

Agoura 17, Simi Valley 1--The Chargers, led by singles players Trisha Silverman and Cindy Nielson and the doubles team of Elise Nakawatase and Kimberly Park, crushed Simi Valley in the 3-A wildcard game at Rancho Simi Valley Park.
