A stingy Westminster High School defense and a passing attack that totaled 286 yards led the Lions to a 23-0 homecoming victory Friday over Marina at Westminster.

Junior quarterback Bob Elliott completed 13 of 31 passes, including 3 touchdowns for the Lions (5-4, 2-2). Senior wide receiver Ben Mendoza caught 5 of Elliott’s passes for 105 yards.

Senior kicker Troy Rossean closed out the scoring with a 40-yard fourth-quarter field goal.

Westminster co-head coach Stan Clark said he went to his passing game because Marina (1-8, 0-4) was lined up against the run. “They stacked eight men on the line against us, so we started passing. Contrary to what some people may think, we can pass the ball.”

The Lion defense, led by seniors Todd Noble and Ray Smith, held Marina to 18 yards rushing. Viking sophomore quarterback Dave Schultz completed 6 of 18 passes for 54 yards.
