Smarr Leads University to 27-7 Win

Gary Smarr scored three touchdowns to lead University High School to a 27-7 Sea View League victory over Estancia Friday at Irvine High School.
Smarr, who rushed for 110 yards in 8 carries, put the Trojans ahead with a 20-yard touchdown run with 7:47 left in the first quarter.
University (4-5, 1-3) went ahead, 14-0, on a 10-yard pass from Jeff Bailey to David Liebke with 4:50 left in the half.
Estancia (2-7, 0-4) scored when quarterback Todd Brooks went over from one yard out with two seconds left in the half.
But Smarr scored two touchdowns in the third quarter on runs of 3 and 22 yards.
Xochitl Gonzalez, the first girl player on the University High team, made her first appearance of the season in the fourth quarter. The 5-foot 6-inch, 158-pound senior running back came in for one play and was stopped for a one-yard loss.
