HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL : Chaminade Gives Rival Cathedral a Rude Farewell, 17-7

After watching Chaminade High pound out a 17-7 win Saturday, Cathedral’s rookie coach, Tim Salter, is glad he has seen the last of the Eagles--at least in Santa Fe League play.

Chaminade’s planned move next season from the Santa Fe to the newly formed San Fernando Valley League is a year too late for Salter, who bid good riddance to Chaminade after Saturday’s defeat at Cathedral.

Chaminade running back Tim Lavin blasted the Cathedral defense for 142 yards in 26 carries and Chris Noonan kicked a 54-yard field goal, assuring Chaminade (7-2, 5-0 in league play) of at least a share of the Santa Fe championship. Cathedral is 2-4-2, 0-3-1.

“They’re a lot bigger and stronger, and they have the big back,” Salter said. “He broke a lot of tackles.”

Lavin (6-2, 205) said the yardage came grudgingly against the Cathedral defense.

“I think they had somebody on me constantly,” he said. “Every time I got the ball there was somebody there.”

Lavin opened the scoring in the second quarter, running seven yards up the middle for a touchdown. The 10-play, 78-yard drive included Lavin runs of 15 and 19 yards.

Just before halftime, Noonan booted his field goal, the longest in the Valley area this season, for a 10-0 lead.

Chaminade’s Joe Norton scored on a one-yard run to culminate a 12-play, 69-yard drive at the start of the second half.

Rosendo Gamboa’s scored Cathedral’s touchdown on a three-yard run late in the game.
