George McQuarn, Cal State Fullerton’s basketball coach, watched his Blue team, mostly first-team players, beat the Orange, 109-57, Wednesday night in an intrasquad basketball scrimmage in Titan Gym, then said his club had “a lot of work to do.”

Henry Turner, a 6-foot 7-inch senior forward and last season’s second-leading scorer with a 15.2 average, scored 40 points for the Blue team, making 12 of 14 shots in the second half.

Richard Morton, a 6-4 senior guard and last season’s leading scorer with an 18.4 average, scored 23 points for the Blue.

“We’re not a basketball team yet. It’s just individuals out there now,” McQuarn said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Van Anderson, a 6-4 junior guard, led the Orange team with 15 points.

Bobby Adair, a 6-8 junior forward who sat out last year after transferring from Utah, scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Adair figures to be crucial in the Titans’ efforts to replace Derek Jones, a starting forward who is recovering after being critically injured in a random shooting in August.

Fullerton opens the season Dec. 2 against Montana in Missoula, Mont.

Three high school players who had made oral commitments to attend Cal State Fullerton--Mike Brown (Westchester), Terry Nelson (Long Beach Poly) and Agee Ward (Washington)--signed national letters of intent on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period.

A fourth player, Wayne Williams, a 6-foot point guard from Manual Arts High School, is expected to sign before the early signing period ends Tuesday.

“We’ve worked real hard and I think we’ve had a real successful recruiting season,” McQuarn said.

Amy Torczon scored 19 points and Wendy Anae added 18 as the women’s Blue team defeated the Orange, 76-50 in the women’s scrimmage. Torczon and Anae, both 6-0 senior forwards, are among five returning starters for the Titans.
