San Diego High School Playoffs : Jorgensen Gets a Section Spot in Cross-Country

Kira Jorgensen of Rancho Buena Vista High School ran the 2.4-mile course at Balboa Park’s Morley Field in 14 minutes 1 second Friday to finish first in the San Diego Section preliminary cross-country meet and qualify for next Friday’s section championship.

Jorgensen’s time helped Rancho Buena Vista also qualify for the section meet, which will be held at Morley Field. Jorgensen’s nearest competitor was Kristy Bache of University of San Diego High School, who finished in 14:25.

Six schools from each of the 1-A, 2-A and 3-A divisions qualified for the section championships: 1-A--Rancho Buena Vista, Coronado, Escondido, El Camino, Mission Bay and Calvin Christian; 2-A--La Jolla, Helix, El Capitan, Fallbrook, Valhalla and Hilltop; 3-A--Poway, Santana, Mira Mesa, San Dieguito, Mt. Carmel and Vista.

BOYS

Goshu Tadese of Crawford had the top time, finishing the 3.1-mile course in 15:00. Tadese qualified for next Friday’s section championships, but his school did not.

Tadese beat his nearest competitor, Jason Salber of University City, by 22 seconds.

Schools qualifying for the section championships: 1-A--St. Augustine, Rancho Buena Vista, Ramona, El Camino, Escondido, Calvin Christian and Mission Bay; 2-A--El Capitan, San Pasqual, Fallbrook, Serra, Torrey Pines and Valhalla; 3-A--Santana, Mt. Carmel, Vista, Poway, Monte Vista and Granite Hills.
