PREP FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS / BIG FIVE CONFERENCE : Buckley, Loyola Run Over Defenseless Westminster

Mike Buckley, Loyola High School senior running back, rushed for 138 yards and scored 2 touchdowns Friday night as the Cubs routed Westminster, 44-6, in a Southern Section Big Five Conference first-round game in front of 2,000 at St. John Bosco High in Bellflower.
Buckley opened the scoring with a 69-yard run on Loyola’s first possession and also scored on an eight-yard run. Loyola (11-0), the No. 2-seeded team in the Big Five and Del Rey League, also was paced by quarterback Jason Evans. The senior completed 8 of 14 passes for 207 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Westminster (6-5) scored its only touchdown midway through the second quarter on a 29-yard pass from Bob Elliott to Ben Mendoza. Elliott completed 10 of 21 passes for 141 yards and had 2 passes intercepted.
Westminster made the playoffs the last week of the season with a 28-3 victory over Ocean View to earn the third-place berth from the Sunset League. It was Westminster’s third consecutive year in the playoffs.
Johann Fuller also scored two touchdowns for the Cubs and rushed for 83 yards in 15 carries.
Loyola advances to play Long Beach Wilson in the second round next Friday at a site yet to be determined.
