Friday’s Highlights : Bishop Amat Beaten in the Quarterfinals Again

Fountain Valley High School led Bishop Amat by just one point, 15-14, after one quarter, but allowed the Lancers just 43 total yards and went on to win, 42-14, Friday night at Bishop Amat in the quarterfinals of the Big Five Conference.

It was the third straight year the Lancers have lost in the quarterfinals.

Running back Courtney Dubar rushed 21 times for 119 yards and two touchdowns for Fountain Valley, which scored 27 straight points after giving up the two early scores.

The Lancers, who for the past three years have entered the quarterfinals undefeated only to lose, scored first on a 30-yard touchdown run by Mayfield Royster.

Royster finished with 150 yards in 25 carries, but he was held to 49 yards in the second half as Fountain Valley held the Lancers to minus 17 yards in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback David Henigan completed 14 of 20 passes for 191 yards, 2 touchdowns and no interceptions for Fountain Valley, which will meet Long Beach Wilson, a 23-7 winner over Loyola, in the semifinals.

Lancer quarterback J.R. Phillips completed just 5 of 14 passes for 94 yards and was intercepted twice. Fountain Valley, which lost its first four games this season, is 8-4.

BIG FIVE CONFERENCE Fontana 42, Long Beach Poly 0--Derrick Malone rushed for 184 yards and 4 touchdowns in 17 carries as the top-seeded and unbeaten Steelers (12-0) routed the Jackrabbits (7-4) in a quarterfinal game played before a crowd of 6,500 at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach. Edrian Oliver also rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown in 16 carries for Fontana, which had 488 total yards.

COASTAL CONFERENCE Antelope Valley 14, Ventura 10--Tommie Smith had a 4-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and took a 9-yard scoring pass from Ron Whipple with 1:22 left in the game to give the Antelopes the quarterfinal win at Antelope Valley High. Ventura had taken the lead at 10-7 in the third quarter on Tim Albrent’s six-yard scoring run. Albrent had 25 carries for 148 yards and 1 touchdowns. Antelope Valley had three interceptions.

EASTERN CONFERENCE Los Altos 20, El Rancho 13--Running back Larry Verdugo rushed 20 times for 128 yards, including a game-winning 19-yard touchdown with 10:51 left, as the Conquerors came back from a 13-6 third-quarter deficit to win the quarterfinal game at El Rancho. El Rancho led, 13-6, after touchdown runs by Jeff Blanco and Ralph De La Torre, but Los Altos came back behind Verdugo and quarterback David Olson. Verdugo had 11 carries for 71 yards in the second half, while Olson completed 13 of 17 for 108 yards, including a three-yard touchdown pass to Blake Hayward in the second quarter. Los Altos (11-1), the defending Eastern Conference champion, has won 10 games in a row and six straight playoff games over two years. El Rancho finishes at 10-1.

South Hills 12, Diamond Bar 7--Trailing 7-6 in the fourth quarter, Shawn Wickoff had a six-yard touchdown run with five minutes remaining to give the Huskies a quarterfinal win at Covina District Stadium. Diamond Bar threatened late in the game, moving to the South Hills 25-yard line, but Joe Hong intercepted a pass to stop the drive. Sean Trijo scored on a 1-yard run and Dick Edmond kicked the extra point to give Diamond Bar a 7-0 lead. South Hills got the tying touchdown in the third quarter on Jerry Wolak’s 19-yard scoring run, but Corey Chalmers missed the extra-point kick. Wolak was the leading rusher for South Hills with 130 yards in 19 carries and also had a 50-yard interception return. South Hills is 10-2; Diamond Bar 8-2-1.

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE Victor Valley 14, Central 3--Top-seeded and previously unbeaten Central of El Centro, the highest-scoring team in the Southern Section, committed six turnovers and was upset by the Victor Valley in the quarterfinal game played before 4,000 at Victor Valley. Quarterback Jerry Dunn rushed for 115 yards in 9 carries, including a 44-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, to lead the Jackrabbits (9-3). The Victor Valley defense was outstanding, limiting Central’s Gerald Robinson to just 52 yards in 18 carries. In the regular season Robinson gained 1,552 yards in 10 games. Last year, the Spartans (11-1) entered the playoffs as an undefeated and top-seeded team and were eliminated by Victor Valley in the semifinals, 5-0.

Arroyo 6, Apple Valley 3--Robert Kwan’s two-yard touchdown run with 54 seconds left capped an 80-yard drive that lifted the Knights (9-3) over the Sun Devils (6-6) in a quarterfinal game played before a crowd of 2,000 at Apple Valley. The key play on the drive was a 26-yard pass from Willie Reyna to Marc Chavria on fourth down and 10 at the Apple Valley 45.

Baldwin Park 6, Chino 0--Sal Hernandez’s two second-quarter field goals proved to be the difference in the quarterfinal game at Chino. The Cowboys outgained Baldwin Park, 228-163, but fumbled away one scoring opportunity and threw an interception. Baldwin Park is 11-1; Chino 10-2.

NORTHWEST CONFERENCE Arroyo Grande 27, Leuzinger 20--Matt Drake had a 12-yard touchdown with 2:32 remaining in the game to break a 20-20 tie and give the Eagles a quarterfinal win at Arroyo Grande. Leuzinger had tied the game earlier in the fourth quarter on a 78-yard pass play from Steve James to Anthony Jefferson. Arroyo Grande wide receiver William Henry had 7 receptions for 124 yards and quarterback Jaime Martin completed 17 of 28 for 246 yards.

INLAND CONFERENCE Mammoth 34, Santa Ynez 17--Marty Thompson’s 55-yard touchdown reception of a pass from quarterback Dan Paranick on a double reverse flea flicker ignited a 34-point Mammoth assault that brought the Huskies back from a 17-0 first-half deficit to a quarterfinal victory at Santa Ynez. The Huskies, who gave up two touchdowns to running back Darren White, dominated the second half, stopping the Pirates on four fourth-down attempts and holding Santa Ynez to just one first down. Running back Perry Rowen contributed to three Mammoth touchdowns, scoring twice on short runs and completing a 27-yard halfback option pass to Thompson in the third quarter to put Mammoth ahead, 28-17. Thompson, a wide receiver and kicker, had 4 receptions for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns, and kicked 4 extra points. Mammoth (11-1), the Desert-Inyo Small league champion, will meet Desert-Inyo Large champion Tehachapi in the semifinals.
