THE COLLEGES : Community College Basketball : Pasadena Beats Saddleback, 76-56, Wins Tournament

Pasadena College won the second annual Saddleback Basketball Tournament Saturday, defeating Saddleback in the championship game, 76-56.

Freshman forward Kirk Wagner led Pasadena (3-2) with 19 points and guard Tommie Dunham added 16 points. Dunham, who had 41 points in the two games he played, was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Saddleback center John Waikle led his team with 12 points, followed by guard Ruben Monge, who came off the bench to score 12 points. Saddleback, which has played its last two games without power forward Vincent Smalls, is now 3-2. Smalls, who is averaging 16 points a game, is in Philadelphia attending his father’s funeral.

In the Saddleback tournament consolation game, Moorpark defeated Grossmont, 104-79. Moorpark’s Demetrius Laffitte led all scorers with 25 points.

In other basketball action:

Golden West 102, Pomona-Pitzer J.V. 62--Golden West ran its nonconference record to 4-0, easily defeating Pomona-Pitzer’s junior varsity team at Golden West. Midway through the first quarter, the Rustlers opened a 17-7 advantage and Pomona-Pitzer never came closer than 10 points again. Freshman forward Markus Muller-Stach, freshman guard Elbert Davis and freshman forward Steve Moser each had 17 points for the Rustlers. Shawn Jensen led Pomona-Pitzer with 17 points.

Rancho Santiago 71, Glendale 69--Freshman center Alonzo Jamison scored 23 points to lead Rancho Santiago over Glendale in the third place game of the College of the Desert Tournament in Palm Desert. Freshman guards Chris Martin and Tommy Villanueva added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Dons.

Although Rancho Santiago led most of the way, Glendale almost tied the game in the final seconds. Geoff Foote, who scored 16 points for Glendale, missed a shot with two seconds left to play, giving the victory to Rancho Santiago (5-2).

Orange Coast 73, San Diego Mesa 50--Dave Miles, a sophomore forward transfer from Saddleback College, scored 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Pirates improved their record to 5-2. Sophomore forward Rob Mase scored 10 of his 18 points in the second half and Derek Johnson added 13 points for OCC. San Diego Mesa, which had no player score in double figures, dropped to 2-3.

Cypress 74, Long Beach College 66--Cypress, ranked 20th in the state, improved its record to 5-0 by beating 19th-ranked Long Beach College at Cypress. Six-foot, six-inch center Kris Brodowski scored 18 points in Cypress’ come-from-behind victory.

Down by five points at the half, Cypress maintained a slim lead through most of the second half. Errick Holmes brought Long Beach within two on a three-point basket, but Greg Spurell scored on a layup to seal the victory.
